Breakfast in Times Square
 

We will be staying at the Doubletree Suites on Times Square next month, and I gather that breakfast in the hotel is fairly expensive (like most NY hotels) Since my wife and I usually only have a fairly basic breakfast of cereal, toast and coffee, can anyone give us directions to a suitable restaurant in the vicinity of Broadway and 47th?

Breakfast in NYC is very reasonable, and I'm sure that you'll see a few places to try near your hotel as your start to explore but here are some ideas so you have a few options to start with:

The restaurant in the Edison Hotel is more like a coffee shop, it's not fancy, the food is decent and it's a lot of fun there, it's a very busy lots to watch while you enjoy breakfast. 228 W 47th St between Broadway & 8th.

If you don't mind a little walk, or if you are heading up to the Park, or West Side or over to see the Time Warner building anyway, try le Pain Quotidien at 7th & 58th. Wonderful artisan breads, waffles, coffees, and a great atmosphere. Lots of seating, friendly wait staff, and you are not rushed through.

Another coffee shop type place is Cosmic Diner at 8th & 53rd. Eggs, pancakes, toast, bagels, etc, very reasonably priced, clean, good service.

If you are going over to Rockefeller Plaza to see the today show you could stop in at Dean & Deluca, good coffee, fruit salad, yogurt, muffins, pastries, breakfast quiche, etc. There are tables upstairs if the main level is crowded. There used to be a D&D in the Paramount Hotel, not sure if it's still there or not and the seating was limited, but it would be a good place to have coffee & danish. 235 West 46th Street between Broadway & 8th

All over NYC are places described as "delis" that have buffet breakfasts, coffee, pastries. I know of one at 51st and 7th, next to the Hilton, but they are very common. They are the kind of places locals go to get a quick breakfast on their way to work.

Evergreen on 47th b/w 6th & 7th is probably the closest coffee shop to your hotel.

You will have a fridge and I think a coffee maker in your room. If all you usually eat is cereal, buy some, get some milk for the fridge and eat in the room. There are also plenty of takeout delis.

If you want to be really decadent, there's a branch of Junior's (known for their cheesecake) on 45 st. just west of Broadway. You can also get coffee there.

The Art Cafe at Broadway & 52 st. is also good.

If you happen to be walking toward Fifth ave. on 44 st., the Red Flame is a good coffee shop on 44th b/w 6th & 5th.

We've stayed at the Doubletree and love it there. They have a fridge so you can easily bring food in. Usually we go to PAX and buy breakfast. It is closeby, reasonable and everything is always good there. Have fun!

Breakfast at any sit-down restaurant or coffee shop in the Times Square area is going to cost you a minimum of $10 per person. If you want to spend that, then there are many, many options, and the Hotel Edison coffee shop is one of the better and more famous places to go.

However, if you go east of Times Square toward 6th Avenue, you'll find coffee carts that sell excellent coffee and pastries/bagels, and you can get that for about $2 (coffee and bagel); in NYC, you tell them you want regular (with milk) or black, and the guy in the cart will put in the sugar for you (don't ask ... but New Yorkers are very demanding that way).

If you go into a deli, you can probably get cereal and cofee for about $5, and many of these have places to sit. Of course there's McDonald's, where you can also get breakfast for $5 or so, but it's by no means healthy.

I should add ... it's the coffee that's excellent at the carts. The bagels and pastries not so much. (There are some famous coffee carts around 6th Avenue/43rd or 44th streets.)

If you want to stock up on breakfast items and snacks/beverages for your room, stop in any Duane Reade (they are all over), they have a decent selection of the basics.

There are also several Starbucks, Au Bon Pain and other coffee-type chains on just about every block.

I also recommend Dean/De Luca in Rockefeller Center. They have all kinds of coffee, croissants, granola w/yogurt, buns, etc. It is between 48th and 49th Streets (btween 5th and 6th Aves.), right across from the skating rink. This would be a short walk from your hotel.

Plus, there is a Duane Reade right across the street.

If you like Japanese pastries, there is a shop next door to D/D on 49th Street, heading towards Saks.

I agree with Margo Chester about Cosmic Coffee, too. The food is good, cheap, and the service is FAST!

They have a mean tuna salad sandwich on pita.
