Breakfast/cafes near Madison &76th St.

Am staying at Hotel Surrey and would like to know of a place nearby for breakfast. Also inexpensive restaurants for dinners in the area.

Via Quadronno & Sant Ambrous are 2 wonderful Italian cafes with good coffee and pastry but both are expensive. Both on Madison Ave. For a regular coffee shop/diner type place, 3 Guys on Madison b/w 75-76 st. but Nectar at Madison & 79 st or Viand on Madison & 78 st are better.

The area is really the high rent district and there are not that many restaurants right near and those that are are not inexpensive. You have to go a bit further east on Lexington Ave. to find good value. One place I think you would love is Vivolo on 74 st & Lexington. They offer a great value $26 prix fixe dinner if you order before 6:30. http://vivolo.vivolonyc.com/pdf/vivolo_pf.pdf

The Nectar Cafe that I mentioned for breakfast also serves decent dinners.

Since the rooms at your hotel are like apartments, you might also consider ordering dinner in. Most any restaurant will deliver. Menupages.com is a great website if you don't know it. For nearby places pick east 70's or east 80's and select type of food you want. Our Place is a good Chinese that will deliver although there are complaints about rude/unappreciative delivery guys here

One of the best diners in Manhattan -- popular with many Yankees -- is GOOGIE'S, on the corner of 78th & Second Ave.

EJ's is also fantastic, Third Ave @ 73rd.

(Yes, both are east of Lexington Avenue where restaurants are much more reasonably priced.)

Gekko - haven't you been by Googie's lately? It's closed . . .

Yeah .. I walked by Googie's just a few days ago. Closed? I didn't notice. For remodeling?
