Breakfast/Brunch from Penn Station

Arriving Penn Station on Sunday @ 8:30 AM. Will be heading to Metropolitan Museum (weather permitting will probably walk to # 6 subway stop to head uptown).

Any ideas for a breakfast/brunch recommendation along the way? Don't need anything elaborate - perhaps a european style cafe.

I have reserved West Bank Cafe for dinner based on recommendations on this board.
Thank you, Lottie

Europacafe is usually reliable for a breakfast sandwich, etc. Their coffee isn't bad. There are several around town, looks like they have two between Penn Station and the 6 train on Park & 33rd.

If you don't want to leave Penn Station there are a bunch of places in the concourse near the LIRR (near the entrance to Penn Plaza) or near the Amtrak/NJ Transit section of the station.

BTW, EuropaCafe isn't fast food, but it is counter service. Food is usually good and for NY, their prices are fair.

I don't go to the one across from my office that much anymore but it's a regular spot for many of my colleagues.

You can also go to Ess-a-Bagel on 3rd Ave and 51st. Just counter service but one of the best bagels in the city.

Taking the 6 train imo is the least desirable option for getting to the Met from Penn station. You wind up walking way out of your way. If you walk to 32 st & 7th ave., you can get the M4 bus which heads east to Madison ave. and then turns up Madison heading north. Get off at 81 or 83 st. and walk to Fifth ave. If you wait to eat til you get uptown, there are a number of coffee shops on Madison ave. from 79-82 st. There's a Nectar on 79th st. and another on 82 st. and There's also a Le Pain Quotidien on Madison & 84-85 st.

If you'd rather eat when you first arrive, while I've not been, Speedy's is a popular place right near Penn station that's open early on Sundays. http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/speedys/

PS the M4 runs in 20 min. intervals on Sundays according to the sched. (8, 8:20, 8:40 etc.) http://www.mta.info/nyct/bus/schedule/manh/m004cur.pdf
While buses rarely run true to schedule, on a Sun. morning given that you're getting on the first stop, I think it would be pretty accurate. If you don't want to wait, you can just walk to Madison and take any bus heading uptown. If you'd prefer the subway, rather than taking the 6, I'd take the C from Penn station to 86th st. & either walk through the park or take a crosstown bus.

I will certainly check on all these restaurants and appreciate the response.

Special thanks to mclaurie for the bus info. The option of the M4 bus, then going for breakfast, sounds good.

After the Met, I will be heading over to Lincoln Center for a matinee of War Horse. Is it too far to walk via Central Park (1 - 1 1/2 miles is OK)? Or, if the weather is not good, is it feasible by public transportation or would you taxi?

Again, thanks to all.

It's a pleasant one mile-ish walk crosstown through the park from the Met to Lincoln Center. If the weather is bad, I would walk down to 79th street and 5th avenue (just a couple blocks south of the entrance) take the M79 bus crosstown (westobound) and transfer on Broadway to the 104 bus heading downtown.
Of course you can take a taxi if you prefer or if time is tight, but the bus option is pretty straightforward.

Ess-a-Bagel, Europacafe & La Pain Quotidien are all going on my list - whichever I miss this time, I'll get to on future visits.

nyer & mclaurie: I appreciate the specific directions - will take the transportation info with me.

This forum is great for firsthand information.
