Breakfast at Tiffany`s ?

Yes I know that Tiffany`s is a store, but we will be arriving at Newark NYC at 5.17am (aghaaaaa!!!!!) in late September, and we know that we cannot check in to our accommodation in Mid-town till approx 2pm.
We will have taken the Red-eye from San Francisco. we`ll almost certainly be tired and possibly grumpy,so,if anyone has a good suggestion of a way to fill the time I`d be very happy. It would be great to be able to know what to do when we land, a funky cafe ,deli or ???
We will be 3 people so is a taxi an option as opposed to a bus into downtown?

For three people from Newark at that hour, I would reserve a car service like Dial7 or Carmel.

Are you staying at a hotel? You probably won't get there until almost 7am to drop your bags. If we knew where you were staying we could make better breakfast suggestions.

ellenem,we are staying in an apartment on 22nd street.
We cannot drop our luggage till check in at 2pm,maybe a little earlier, but we will be hauling them around with us for a while. I will try to use your suggestion re the car service, what do you think we should expect to pay to get downtown?

You can get a quote by going to the website, dial7.com or carmel.com. There may also be a coupon for a discount.

Check with the apartment, they might let you leave your bags there before checkin, sometimes they do or you can probably leave them at a hotel bell stand, like the Ramada which would be a good choice, on W 34th and 8th Ave, and then you can grab breakfast at one of the restaurants in the area. That way you can see a bit of midtown and then go back to the hotel and get your luggage and catch a cab right there to 22nd St.

Are you aware there are a lot of apt. scams online? I hope you didn't pay by transferring money into someone's bank account. Most apt. rentals are also against the rules of the apt. building. The inconvenience of not having a place to leave luggage is just one of many inconveniences you may face with the apt. rental.

Schwartztravel.com will store luggage for a fee. You can take a train to Penn station in Manhattan and drop luggage at their location near there. The STaten Island ferry (for a view of the STatue of Liberty) is one early morning idea. The Empire state is not far from Penn station and early morning would be a good time to go there. (Buy tickets in advance online to avoid that line).

menupages.com will give you places to eat in any area. Penn station/ESB are in the west 30's. Tick Tock diner is one idea.

What day of the week are you arriving?

Hi mclaurie, yes we have booked our aptm.through reputable company ,and have only paid a deposit,so hopefully we will have somewhere to lay our weary bodies, with little hassle.
Wow! that is some list on menupages.
How do you even begin to decide?
We are Australians so would be keen to have a `diner` type breakfast, I spent a bit of time in the States 30 years ago, and loved the diners , so the Tick Tock sounds like a plan to me.
My friends have not traveled much so a diner would be a fabulous intro to NYC.
WE arrive on a Monday, does this make a difference?
Travelbuff, thanks ,I checked out your suggestions, what a great service, only $44 to get into Manhattan!
Counting the days till we get there.

That's a realy good deal on the car service. A taxi would be more like $75 and then add toll and tip.

You will need to add tolls and a tip to the car service so it will be closer to $65. There's also an Express bus service ($15/person-no toll or tip needed) that would drop you at Port Authority bus terminal which is closer to Times Square. There are a lot of places to eat near there too. http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp

I believe the express bus also drops at 34th St and 8th Ave, right in front of Tick Tock.

Please don;t use the phrase "downtown" - what you mean is the island of Manhattan. In New York "downtown" is used to refer to the area at the far southern end of the island, including the financial center and city hall/courts/government center. (Your apartment is north of downtown and south of midtown.)

However "midtown" is a major business and shopping area with all the large department stores and many sights (34th to 59th Sts) and the upper east and west sides (59 th to 125th sts) have many of the major museums, Central Park and many of the upscale residential areas. (There are a lot of other areas in Manhattan, but most tourists won;t visit them.)

and really encourage you to check your luggage as soon as schwartztravel opens, since the sidewalks are way too crowded to be hauling luggage or large backpacks around with you.

Assuming the weather is good staying outdoors for a while will help you reset your body clock as soon as possible. (And the only way to eat Breakfast at Tiffanys is to get coffee and bagel from one of the ubiquitous delis and stand in front looking in the windows - not fun).

Hehe just had to reply to this. I plan to do exactly that (maybe switch the bagel for a pastry) when I go to New York for the first time in a couple weeks. But only because I'm admittedly a huge dork.

Sorry to hijack thread. Carry on.

Just so you're aware - in the move the movie must have been shot at about 5 am some Sunday morning. If you go at a normal hour the street will be packed with people rushing off to work.

Yes,I am well aware that you cannot eat in the store,it was just a tag to get your attention. It worked a treat!
lifeofmylife,go right ahead & be a `dork`, who cares,I think it`s a lovely idea! Tiffany`s is such an icon in lots of peoples imaginations. I have been to Tiffany`s a couple of times, was even lucky enough to buy something once.
Go in ,not everything is expensive.
mclaurie, thanks for the info re tolls &tips ,that would be a rude surprise. We will still do the car service,it`s too early and it would be lovely to be `met`.
