Bread Pudding - New Orleans Style
My husband and I just got back from New Orleans. We had a wonderful time staying with some friends who are working there for a few months.

I had the most wonderful bread pudding at two different restaurants. Unfortunately neither restaurant would disclose their recipes. Does anyone have a good recipe to share with me? I'd love to surprise my husband with a bread pudding dessert for his birthday over the weekend, since he says that it's his new favorite dessert.

I have a great one, but it calls for quite a bit of liquor. I made it this past Christmas and it was a big hit. I don't have time to type it all up right now, though. I could email it to you, but I see you don't post your real address, either.

It's in a cookbook called Texas Home Cooking by Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison. The recipe is on page 535 and it's called "Capirotada." The books states that it's a common Texas bread pudding, but is a traditional New Orleans recipe.

Maybe you can find it in a library or bookstore. If so, it's worth a try.

You might also want to try "Cajun Men Cook" or any other traditional Louisiana cookbook that's locally available to you.

Thanks everyone.

My husband loves pineapple, so I might be trying one of the recipes from the website.

One of the ones we had in New Orleans was a white chocolate bread pudding with raspberry sauce - to die for - just wish I had the recipe for that one!

Try the Recipe forum on NOLA.com. I've gotten some great bread pudding recipes from there.

the trick about new orleans bread pudding is that they use all the left over french bread and after they mix with eggs and cream and sugar they let it sit overnight prior to baking.
try emerils.com for his recipe..
The white chocolate bread pudding recipe from the Palace Cafe is on the Epicurious.com web site (recipe search by key words.) Top it with a whiskey sauce instead of the white chocolate sauce. You will get invited to a lot of parties if the hosts know you will bring a batch.

So many great recipes to choose from now. I may have to make him a few different ones! Thanks for the help!!!

The key is the bourbon sauce. Never make it with chocolate or creamy type sauces. The bourbon sauce is a simple hard sauce recipe with butter, sugar and bourbon. Delicious!

Since my husband has liver problems, he can't digest alcohol, so it's nice to have non-bourbon sauce options. Some of those recipes look so yummy. I think I'm going to be surprising the family with bread pudding over the weekend. Thanks for a mouth watering threat!

One of my favorite NO bread puddings is Paul Prouhomme's (?spell?). That recipe is in his original cookbook. I also have a great one for "banana nut bread pudding". It has banana slices embedded in the pudding and a "to die for" hot chocolate sauce poured over the top.

I was inspired by this posting and made my mom some bread pudding for Mother's Day. A big hit with her and my aunts. Thanks for the ideas.
