500ish? Not looking for super cheap or super expensive and probably not in midtown.
I like to get up and walk along the Hudson. After I left NYC I used to stay at friends in the west village and there's a part of me that wants to recreate that but times do change.

NYLO nice modern hotel in a great upper west side location. close to subway entrances (but then just about everywhere is!) a few blocks from Natural History museum, grocery markets, delis and not too far from LaLo's for coffee, breakfast, dessert. Also just a couple blocks from a new favorite NY restaurant Isabella's 359 Columbus at 77th....

Thanks everyone. The Jade Hotel and the Marlton are booked. The Gansevoort and The Standard are on the list to consider as is The Elysee even though it's in midtown. I've stayed there before and like it. I also gave a reservation at The Trump Soho through Amex travel. Now to make a decision.

Boutique hotels are not just smaller.
A standard definition is hotels between 10 and 100 rooms with luxury facilities in unique or intimate settings with full service accommodations. Typically boutique hotels are furnished in a themed, stylish and/or aspirational manner. Boutique hotels are often individual and focused on offering their services in a comfortable, intimate, and welcoming setting, so they are very unlikely to be found among the homogeneity of large hotels.
Beacon is certainly a fine hotel but doesn;t have a lot of luxury facilities not does it have a unique and interesting theme. If coming to NYC I would certainly consider staying there due to location and often recommend it - but I don't focus on just boutique hotels.

Thanks, nytraveler. The Beacon is a small hotel, then, I guess. We loved it there. Its location is perfect, especially for a solo traveler, because of the market across the street and its kitchenettes. We found the front desk service to be very good, too.

In midtown, Ink48 is very far west so easy to get to the greenway. In Soho, in addition to Trump, the James and Crosby St. One of the nicest boutiques in the city is the Greenwich in Tribeca but will push your budget.
