Hi Kate, you didn't mention any hotels but let me say I just spent 5 nights (6 days) again at the Villa Florence Hotel which is part of the Kimpton Group Hotels. It is located at 225 Powell St., just a few doors down Powell from Union Square. Their website is www.villaflorence.com.
The location is perfect for walking to so many neighborhoods in SF plus the public transportation of all kinds is right there.
Their Kuletos Restaurant is wonderful including the breakfasts that they serve. They have a hosted wine hour each night in their lovely lobby at 5:00pm.
And "no" I don't work for them or for Kimpton..I just always enjoy the hotel and the charming and helpful hotel staff.

ooo, you can stay in some nice ones for that budget! In that case I second the hotels in the Kimpton group. Don't they still have a complimentary afternoon wine reception in many of the SF Kimpton hotels?

Yes, the Kimpton Group Hotels do have a hosted wine hour every evening which quite lovely wines. Kate, another Kate Kimpton Hotel which is a couple of blocks west of Union Square on Geary St., is the Hotel Monaco that has the popular Grand Cafe attached to it. I prefer the Villa Florence as it is just a couple of doors down from Union Square and since I am on my own I don't want to walk west on Geary when it is dark. Our Fodorite Starrsville loves the Hotel Monaco.

WOW Hawaiiantraveler, I am jealous!! Eat enough for me!
I stayed in the Cartwright when it was part of the Kimpton group but have been dying to stay in the Villa Florence or Monaco! For the record--the Cartwright was really great when it was part of the Kimpton group. You could tell the difference once they split from Kimpton!

Do you want to be right on Union Square or just nearby? I think of the Andrews Hotel as being more budget than boutique, but we do LOVE the Fino Bar & Ristorante next door - far superior to Kuleto's for our taste (food, atmosphere). Villa Florence looks very nice, although we've never stayed there. Could be a bit noisy in that section of Powell St. So far, our top choice is Renaissance Stanford Court for comfort, location, view, and price. Rooms may vary there, but ask about specifics of the room. Ours was 4th floor, remodeled, with a lovely city view. We could see Union Square and it was only a 2 blk walk down Powell St. Location is at corner on Nob Hill at 2 cable car lines, yet was surprisingly quiet. We could easily walk to the theater district, Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach...
