Bourbon Distilleries

I am interested in recommendations on which bourbon distilleries to visit while visiting Kentucky. I would be especially like to know about any small or "boutique" bourbon distilleries that should not be missed. Thanks for the help!

My dad visited Heaven Hill in Kentucky
This institution is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Quite inexpensive, and good tasting.
The father in the tasting is an expert, like most men.

Many years ago, we liked the tour of Ancient Age distillery.

Heaven Hill is added to our list. Ancient Age is part of Buffalo Trace and we are doing a "hard hat tour".

Thank you very much for your help!

I have been to Makers Mark. They dip the bottles into the red wax (?) right in front of you. I was there for a party during the Kentucky Derby weekend. It was a fun party and the mint juleps were basically bourbon with a mint stick.

While visiting Bardstown, we toured Barton Distillery. It was free and fantastic! They have a Bourbon Ball Liqueur that is fantastic.

I did a TR a little while ago when we did the Bourbon Trail. Here's the TR from that first trip: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...mmoth-cave.cfm

We returned last year and went with my mother and had fun again. That time Bulleit and Evan Williams were added to our visit list and we liked both. Evan Williams is sort of like a tour at Disney--there's some kitschy mannequins and storytelling involved. Bulleit was typical of other distilleries we had visited previously.

I think Woodford Reserve is a "can't miss"--very cool, beautiful location, and their system for moving barrels is neat.

If we go back to the area we really want to tour the cooperage but they only operate M-F (since they are actually a working cooperage and those are the working hours) here: http://www.iscbarrels.com/tours/

Don't miss Angel's Envy which is located downtown Louisville. If time allows, also check out Copper and Kings brandy distillery, not far from Angel's Envy.
