Boulder vs. Longmont vs. Loveland

I'm trying to decide whether to use Boulder, Longmont, or Loveland as home base for a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. We aren't looking for excitement--just a comfortable place to spend two nights.

If just looking for a bed use Longmont or Loveland. Boulder will be more expensive and depending on you dates full of students, parents, and others. The fall football season and classes are underway. Loveland would be closer and there are other options.

Do you mean a home base and you'll drive into to RMNP each day?
If so, consider Lyons

Boulder is cooler, Longmont is cheaper. Check out funky Nederland, up the mountain from Boulder on the Peak to Peak National Byway. Of course lots of people use Estes Park.

To clarify: we will arrive at the Denver airport in the late afternoon and drive to our hotel for the night. We will spend the following day in RMNP and return to our hotel that night. The next day we will continue of trip to other parts of Colorado.

When we visited RMNP on two previous occasions, we stayed in Estes Park both times. We want to stay elsewhere this time.

PS I'll check out Lyons.

If you stay near the i25 hotels of Loveland, you'll have to slog a long way through a lot of traffic and lights to get across town on 34.
Not a lot of options in Lyons.

Thanks all and sylvia3 for pointing out the inconvenience of driving through Loveland on 34. I found it is also slow going from hotels of our choice in Longmont and Boulder. I guess we'll go for the best deal.

If you wind up in Loveland or otherwise plan to use Highway 34 then keep on eye on the construction closures and delays. Right now a closure is scheduled for Sept 11-12:

There is a La Quinta Inn on the far west side of Loveland, kind of a weird location, but it gets you closest to the mouth of the canyon.

I second that La Quinta in western Loveland. Gets you out of all the Loveland 34 traffic and it is a lovely drive up the canyon to Estes from there.
