Boulder/Chautaqua trip in spring or fall?
 

My husband and I are planning a trip to stay at Chautaqua with our toddler daughter but can't figure out if we should go in late spring or early fall. It's already booked up for summer, unfortunately. Any recommendations? and also, any advice or views about Chautaqua? We are planning on renting a cottage there and spend some time walking down to boulder and just hanging out.

Fall might be a safer bet around here, weather-wise. Spring can be glorious, but it can also be very snowy (albeit briefly). Early fall is almost always a win-win for color, skies, and warmth.

I agree with Sylvia.

Another vote for early Fall. Probably a safer bet weatherwise. Chautauqua (sp) is a beautiful spot, with nice cabins and views of the Flatirons. The restaurant there is especially nice with its outdoor veranda seating and good food, good service. Hiking is great from there, too, just be aware there's wildlife in 'them thar hills'!
But Boulder itself isn't exactly walking distance from Chautauqua. You can walk to CU and the Hill area from there (a rather long walk, and not for a toddler on foot), but it's not an easy walk all the way into the Pearl Street Mall. Are you familiar with Boulder? There are buses, of course, if you don't have a car.

I agree with other posters. September has the nicest and most dependable weather of any month. Temperatures in the seventies and low eighties, clear blue skies. Chautaqua is wonderful. You will need a car to get around.

Thank you for your suggestions. We have decided on mid-september. Luckily, there are a lot of cabins available! Hopefully there will be some fall colors?! We shall see!
