Boston Weather
 

Hello all - I was just wondering what the weather is usually like in Boston during July or August. I'm from Oklahoma, so I'm used to hot summer weather, but was hoping that it might be cooler up north. We're planning on walking the Freedom Trail for a couple of days, and then visiting Lexington/Concord and Plymouth. I'm hoping the heat isnt too bad that time of year. Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Although Boston weather is notoriously unpredictable, our summers are generally pretty darn hot and humid - but that doesnt seem to slow down visitors who happily converge on the area during those months. Even coastal Maine can be steamy during mid-summer - we like to tell a story about flying home from Miami during July a few years ago and when we got on the plane the pilot informed us that the temperature in Boston was more than 10 degrees warmer than in Miami - was teetering at 100 degrees when we landed!<BR>But please dont let me scare you folks away - plan a nice leisurely itinerary and book an air conditioned hotel (almost all are) and come on up and have a blast!

Boston is typically in the mid 80's to low 90's in mid summer, but can be sweltering in the mid 90's during a heat wave. A few notes on your itinery:<BR>don't expect too much from Plymouth, unless you plan a visit to Pimouth Plantation, which is a lot of fun.<BR>The Freedom Trail is a long walk (especially between the North End and Charlestown), but can be done in one day. You might also want to consider taking in a few days at either Cape Cod or the Maine Coast; or the mountains of New Hampshire or Vermont - very beautiful countryside.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I heard that the average temp in July was 82, but I imagine it can get a lot hotter than that. We are definately planning on a visit to Plimouth Plantation and are scheduling in 2 days for the Freedom Trail. Thanks again for your advice!

Sure, Boston's average temp might be 82, but that's an average of 90-degree days and rainy 70-degree days ! Be prepared for almost anything! <BR><BR>Plimoth Plantation is indeed the main sight in Plymouth, along with the Mayflower II ship (if it's in town). <BR><BR>We can go years without hitting 100 degrees, we've even had years recently when it hardly ever went over 90. Last summer had an unusually high number of days over 90. Historically, the highest temps are last 2 weeks in July and first week in August; after that, the shorter days are noticeable and the evenings usually cool off nicely. Just stay hydrated, and in the shade whenever possible!
