Boston to Scituate Rental Car Question

Thank you for the help on Boston neighborhoods. I will be arriving into Boston Logan mid-day on a Thursday and will need a car for three days while in Scituate. However, I am then going into Boston city for three days and won't want the car any longer. I'll get a cab to the airport when leaving. I know I can get a Hertz car at the airport and drop it in town at the Park Plaza, but are there any other options? Would it be better to pick up elsewhere? Can I drop the car without having to drive all the way into Boston traffic (it will be a Sunday am so shouldn't be too bad) and then get transportation into the city (Beacon Street)?

Your current plan (Logan pick-up; PP drop-off) will be the easiest and most time-efficient. However, it's probably not the cheapest option.

If you drive back Sunday morning, traffic should be minimal.

If you really don't want to drive into Boston, you can see if you can drop off the car in Scituate near the commuter rail station. From there, you can catch the commuter rail into South Station.

If there's no car rental drop off in Scituate, you can try other commuter rail stations along the way. I think Enterprise usually has a location at some of the commuter rail stations.

From South Station to Beacon Street, you'll have to take the Red Line to Park Street station and change for the Green Line to either Copley Station or Hynes (depending on which apt you end up taking).

[If it were me, I'd definitely drive into Boston to return the car.]

There's a Hertz in Weymouth Mass, not far from Scituate, and Hertz will drive you to the nearby commuter rail station after you drop off your car.

Check the commuter rail schedule at mbta.com; some routes don't run very often on weekends.

Frankly, I agree with yk: dropping off in Scituate or Weymouth, getting a shuttle to the train and taking the Commuter Rail and subway to the hotel sounds like 10 times as much trouble as dropping off at Park Plaza.

What about getting to the Weymouth or Scituate station and getting the Hertz people to rent to you out there? - Logan has a whopping airport fee on top of really high rates, so renting from Logan is about as expensive as you can go.

Another thing to consider is the opening hours of Hertz in Weymouth on a Sunday. I have no personal experience in Boston, but at other cities, I have noticed that some local car rental offices don't open on Sundays or have very limited hours.

Not quite on topic, but I have to ask... How do you prononce Scituate? I saw it in the title and thought, wow, thats a big typo right in the title!

That's my home town ;-)! The "c" is silent. Si-tchu-wut is how you say it.

If you want to really sound like an insider, call it the "Irish Riviera"! I was married there and had my reception at a fancy restaurant that had been the site of the local pizza joint when my husband summered there as a kid in the 50's.

NWW's pronunciation is technically correct of course, but I'd have rendered it as sitcha-wit.
