What's the fastest and cheapest way to get from Boston to New York?

The cheapest is the Fung Wah bus which operates between the Chinatown neighborhoods of the two cities. (fungwahbus.com). Just $20 round trip. It takes 4 to 4.5 hours. It's well known in NYC as the cheapest way to travel to Boston, however, I don't know anyone who has done it.

I like Amtrak, the fastest and most comfortable way to travel between the two cities. The Acela Express train takes 3.5 hours and costs $198 round trip. The regular trains (just as comfortable but a little older/slower) take just over 4 hours and cost $128 round trip.

I have a friend in NYC who used to travel often to see his parents in Boston, and he always took the Peter Pan bus. $50 round trip, 4 - 4.5 hours.

The "Chinatown Buses" must be giving Greyhound a bit of competition. Travel between Boston's South Station and New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal for just $20 each way when you buy your tickets at least seven days in advance, based on roundtrip purchase. One-way tickets are just $25.

Many of the buses will actually be Peter Pan Buslines, usually nicer buses with movies. I've been told the "Chinatown" buses usually fill up EVERY seat, so don't expect to have the entire "bench" to yourself.

Check Amtrak's "rail sale" http://tickets.amtrak.com/Amtrak/railsale quite often for some deals. Right now I see $30.40 each way on selected trains.

i had a friend travel using the chinatown bus, and it was kind of a nightmare. on the way there, they had chinese movies on LOUD. my friend couldnt even drown it out with his walkman. on the way back, they cancelled the bus with no notice and my friend had to wait until very late sunday night to catch the next bus. he didnt get back until the wee hours.

i used to take greyhound all the time. if you want cheap, this is the way to do it. the downsides are traffic and questionable co-passengers. the train usually has a more business like clientele and is not affected by traffic... though you pay more and it's not much faster.

if you want fast, take a plane! it's less than an hour each way. watch for fare sales on delta shuttle and usair shuttle. sometimes you can get it as cheap as $100 round trip. downsides- dealing with the airport and cab fare from laguardia to manhattan is around $30.

My friend takes the Fung Wah bus from NY to Boston almost every other weekend. He's never had any trouble. Most buses are pretty new.

There's an article in today's Boston Globe about the Chinatown buses, and it says that you should plan "days in advance" whereas before their popularity you could buy a ticket from the driver.
