Boston to Acadia

My husband I are considering a drive from Boston to Acadia leaving Boston Sept 3 and departing from Bangor, Maine on Sept 7. We are flying into Boston and will be there for a few days before we begin the road trip. Our schedule is a bit flexible however we must be in Boston Sept 1-2. This would be our first time in Maine and seeing the park is our goal.

Can you recommend a route that will get us to Acadia comfortably yet allow us time in the park ? If needed we could leave from Bangor 1- 2 days later.

Thanks for your help.

There is no better route from Bangor than the one shown on Google Maps.

There are more interesting and scenic routes from Boston, but if ya gotta go to Bangor . . . .

Take I95. It will be a long boring ride. Suggest you plan for lunch in Portland or someplace further north that has good lobster. We prefer the mid-coast area so we get off I95 in Brunswick and travel Rt 1 from there. But, Rt 1 goes thru "downtown" Wiscasset and Camden which is scenic but can be slow on Friday afternoons. Without traffic, it is still slower this way but much more scenic. Highly recommend the auto road up Mt Battie in Camden. You could take a quick drive to the top and back down but it's also a great place for a picnic. Bring binnoculars. You can watch boats in Camden harbor and coming along the coast. If you're lucky, you'll see windjammers sailing since several are based in Camden.

You have time for an overnight along the way unless you want to do a lot of hiking or biking in Acadia. Boothbay Harbor requires a short detour but is also scenic and you can do a nice walk at Maine Coastal Gardens.

Go thru old posts on Maine for people's favorite spots. You can drive to Acadia in a day but you would miss a lot. Plus it's fun to get out on the water whether it's the mailboat cruise out of Portland or a light house cruise.

If you don't have to go to Bangor, I agree 100% with dfrostnh.

Thanks for feedback. Thinking of Bangor only to make this a one way trip and fly out of Bangor instead of backtracking to Boston ?
