Boston Road Trip: Provincetown, MA or Portland, ME

We're considering driving to either Portland or Provincetown from Boston this weekend and can't decide which is the better option. Are we silly to consider Provincetown at this time of the year? Is Portland as cool and quintessentially New England as my friends say? (We're two sisters around age 30 travelling with our mom.)

Depends on what you want to do when you get there. Portland has great restaurants, shopping, and a fine art museum, and it's not far from Freeport.

Also consider Newport RI. Not as far. Lots to do.

I like Provincetown in the off season and you can stay there for really cheap. It will be a little desolate however. Most galleries and stores are still open on the weekends but during the week a lot are closed.

Portland is a great city to visit also so you won't go wrong either way. Portland has a moderately good local music scene and great restaurants. I also think some of the little towns in Maine before you get to Portland (York, Ogunquit, Portsmouth NH) are nice to visit in the off-season.

have a great trip

Either one will be fine, but you may want to choose Portland because of location.

P'Town is out on the tip of Cape Cod, and once you're out there, you're going to be pretty much stuck in P'Town.

Not that Portland in the middle of a bustling area, but it is more convenient to other places. And personally, I like Portland better. A little more diversity over and above P'Town's endless strings of quaint restaurants and shops.

In our house, Maine is tops for a place to visit. We love Portland. The restored waterfront is loaded with things to do, the Portland Head lighthouse is neat to visit, and, as someone said, it isn't too far to Freeport and LL Bean.
