I am arriving Logan airport headed to Newbury ST. Since the Big Dig (is it really over?), what's the best way to get to Newbury St?

The dig isn't really over, in part because they have discovered numerous leaks. I read the other day in the Globe that certain sections will be shut off due to ongoing repairs of those leaks. I wish that I could give you some specific advise, but I haven't been out to the airport recently to know what's going on. Other local Fodorites might be able to help, or you could look up Big Dig and recent traffic effects on the Globe website for info.

As you mention "public transportation" - do you mean bus/subway? If so

and unless something has happened to cause subway problems, I would think the easiest way between the two would be to take Blue Line to Government Center, change to Green Line, exiting at Copley. I don't have my detailed map, so maybe locals or someone with a map can correct me.

yes get off at at either Arlington which is the start of Newbury street, anchored by the old Ritz Carlton that over looks the Boston Public Garden.
The next stop is Copley. This is next to the Boston Public Library around the corner from Newbury Street that is the only place that has cross streets alphabetically.

Dartmouth,
Exeter,
Fairfield,
Gloucester,
Hereford
and the end at Mass. Ave

P.S. should anyone get disoriented, always go to Park Station. It's where everyone goes to change lines.

The Big Dig is irrelevant, since public transit isn't affected. Take the free airport shuttle (bus 11, 22, or 33) to the Airport subway station, get the Blue Line to Government Center, then get a Green Line train. Your specific train and stop depend on your specific destination on Newbury Street, since some of the 4 the Green Lines run up Boylston Street, parallel to Newbury. You might want the Boylston Street station, which is right at the beginning of Newbury Street, or later stops like Copley.

Park Street Station is fine for changing lines between the Red and Green lines, but not for the Orange and Blue lines, which don't go there. All visitors should get a map at www.mbta.com.

Ooops, sorry, the poster above is correct -- it's the ARLINGTON Street stop that's at the beginning of Newbury Street.

Anyone taken the new Silver line that's right at the airport and connects to the Red line? Is it a very far walk from the Silver to the Red with wheelie luggage?

Transferring from Red to Silver at South Station is about like transferring between any other two lines. But both of the elevators were broken when I took it, so be sure you can handle your luggage!
