Boston or providence
For those of you in these areas, when do you think the prime time for the fall colors will be.
I just drove from Boston to Providence today, down Route 95. Just starting -- give it another week or two.
Thanks,
If I wait til the 19th, will it be too late? Also are hotels really fairly empty even this time of year. Can I wait till I get there to find a hotel or would you suggest I reserve in advance.
Drove up to Nashua, N.H. yesterday and colors turning..if your coming to Boston put it off for another week..and Providence..a week later. Have looked out my back door ion the Route 495 area and the trees are starting, people are picking apples, little town fairs, it's fall and the mums, pumpkins and scarecrows are out..
I'm unclear what "another week" means. Another week from this weekend or the 19th?
October 19 might be too late. it's hard to tell, because so much depends on the weather. If you must wait til the 19th, Providence would be a better bet.

Normally, the hotels get filled with foliage-seekers, but this year could be different. Nevertheless, it would be a good idea to make reservations ahead of time.
I heard on the weather forcast today that peak foliage time in the greater Boston area is the week of October 6-7th, Colombus Day weekend.
Look ladies, I live in the foliage area and I don't expect major foliage this upcoming weekend.. We are talking the Route 495 area...of course any rain and warmer weather might change that.. but the Colombus Day weekend is early thisyear.
You better get a hotel room booked and I would vote for the Providence area. There's a convention going on in Providence Columbus Day weekend and the following weekend there's a convention going on in the Warwick area. We've driven around RI around Oct 23 and it's still been pretty but a little post peak.
Sorry Judy, but I must agree with Parrot Mom -- foliage in the Boston area will NOT be peaking, or perhaps even evident, on Columbus Day weekend. I am looking out my window right now at maple trees IN Boston, and they have barely started. Most are still completely green. The forecast for the next few days is relatively warm, with highs in the 70s, so they will not be on some sort of accelerated schedule.
It is 8:40 a.m. and I looked out the picture window at the huge trees in this neighborhood, opened the back door and took another look at the maples, catalpa, etc. and especially the maples on my front lawn...THERE IS NO HINT OF COLOR. I live in the Metro-West area of Boston..
I live just south of Providence and I always remeber the date of peak foliage - it's my anniversary - Oct 17!!

Have fun planning....
Emily

I was just reporting what our friendly meteorologist said. I actually live on the North Shore and a lot has already changed. Took a drive in Topsfield over the weekend and one of the most beautiful fields of color every year has peaked already. It must just vary depending on where you are.
THanks everyone but I couldn't get a flight to BOS on miles. Delta says they are gone, I suppose others had long ago took these prime weekends. So it's DC instead and I'll be there too soon as there reduced miles requirement ends on Oct 14th so I'm going on the 12th. Maybe next year.
