Have a blast in Boston, one of my favourite US cities. I really enjoy Phila. too and I recommend not writing it off forever; the two cities despite a relative proximity have quite different characters to my eyes. Phila. has a much more sizeable African American population and a gritty charm, as well as some terrific museums and streetlife (and as much "early 13 colonies" history as Boston).
While either truly would have been a good choice, you'll have a great time with your pick (check out Cambridge while there).
Best wishes

I have now lived in both cities. I would vote for Boston any day of the week and twice on Sunday! There is more history there, it is more oganized and accessible for tourists, there is more to do in general, and it is a far nicer/cleaner/safer city than Philadelphia.
As for Red Sox tickets... that is tough. I had the good fortune of working them for four seasons and have volumes of great experiences to recall now! I still go to games but usually I have to get tickets that a friend won in a contest or got as part of some promotion. I know that Hotel Commonwealth can get you tickets and they are practically right next to Fenway Park. They have a Red Sox package during the summer that includes tickets but the concierge there can always find tickets for you if you contact him in advance. The drawback. You will end up paying top dollar for the room and the tickets. I just put it out there because I have known many from out of town who went to a game that way... they either booked the package or got tickets from the concierge. If you contact Hotel Commonwealth they can give more info on when packages are available or they can put you in touch with the concierge.
