Boston/Motels near train station
Will be driving to Boston but want to stay outside of the city so would like a motel within walking distance of trains into Boston (also to Fenway). Thank you.

You want to stay outside of the city because why? For free parking?
How many people are in your party, when & how many days will you be here?
The only hotel I can think of that fits your criteria is the Newton Hotel Indigo. It is a few minutes' walk to Riverside Station on the Green D Line (our subway system). Please realize that the ride from Riverside into the city takes 45 minutes each way.
If you are thinking of train = COMMUTER RAIL, note that:
1) Commuter rail runs 1-2x/hr during rush hour; less frequent during off-peak hours. If you miss a train, you may end up waiting for >1 hr for the next train.
2) Commuter rail costs at least $10 per person roundtrip, so if there's 3-4 of you, the cost of train tickets > parking charge in the city
3) If part of your stay is over a weekend, commuter rail runs on a weekend schedule which is even less frequent than weekdays. Some commuter rail lines do not operate on Sundays.

Commuter rail is not terribly convenient for getting home after a Red Sox game, either, since you mentioned Fenway. You would have to get a hotel on the Worcester Framingham line, if that was the case. SAnd I'm not aware of a hotel that is within walking distance of one of the train stations on that line...there may be one near one of the inner suburbs, like Newton or Wellesley, I'm just not sure.
The Indigo, on the Green line would work best.
But if you can swing it, staying in town would be better!
