Boston/Marthas vineyard late July or early Sept?

My husband and I ( 40s) have an unexpected 4 days off in 2 weeks and want to visit Boston &/ or MV. We haven't been to either and would like to visit. Is late July or early Sept better as far as weather, crowds, etc.? Also need some advice on where to stay /eat. If Sept is better we have 5-6 days .

September will be less touristy for certain and the weather should be perfect.

Thanks. We can go any time Sept 1-6. Labor Day is Sept 3. Is this a good time or too busy ? With it being the last holiday before school if it will be too hectic getting flights and lodging?
Any ideas for lodging?

Labor Day will be extremely busy. It would be better to do the weekend after.

Don't know if you could get lodging without trying.
Also don't know if you plan or want to bring your own automobile over, and your timing could be dependant on openings for that also, unless you are fine with using the bus systems and perhaps renting a vehicle for a day or two if you wanted.

There are many threats here on Boston and MV to help you choose. Have you been to either? If you want to do both, I vote for Sept since you have more time, especially if you want to do both but that weekend can be crazy with college kids moving in Boston on Labor Day Weekend, cape traffic between Boston and MV (dpending on how you chose to get to MV) - and finding lodging - but still, it can be done - public bus from Boston to Woodshole, ferry to MV (as passenger with no vehicle reservation necessary) etc, etc.

Ifyou can go the weekend after Labor Day, agree your travel and lodging would perhaps be easier to arrange and things less crowded but still open everywhere.
