Why limit yourself to the rather slim pickings right near the station? You can get the Red Line subway or a $10 cab ride to dozens of places and avoid all that trekking with luggage.

Another option if you are taking Amtrak is to get a hotel near the Back Bay station. The Marriott, the Westin, Copley Plaza are easy walking distance to that station.

Other hotels near South Station is the Seaport Hotel, Boston Harbor Hotel (the closest)and the Marriott Long Wharf.

Near the aquarium there is the Chart House restaurant, Legal Seafood and the North End is very close with many options or Quincy Market area where Kingfish Hall gets good reviews, Rosie O'Sheas is an Irish pub that features French food upstairs (its on State St). Lots of choices.

bennie, I can't believe that I didn't think of that! All the Amtrak trains go thru Back Bay station before arriving at South Station, and Back Bay is one of the loveliest parts of the city, with plenty of nice hotels and restaurants. Even if the next leg of the trip is out of South Station, it's a short cab ride away next morning.

Now that I think of it, the only train to Maine that I know of is the Downeaster to Portland, which leavs from North Statoin, so probably pat isn't going to need to be at South Statoin the next AM anyway! Pat, you can get the subway Orange Line from Back Bay station to North Station, where the northbound trains leave from. That will actually be more convenient than getting from the South Station area to North Station.
