Boston - Hotel near the history
 

Howdy All,
I'm newish here. Been traveling for a bit, and I can normally find a hotel near where I want to be, but Boston mystifies me!!
I'm a history geek, and I want to do the "classic Boston" history walks. What's near there? Any specific hotel recommendations? But more than anything, what area of Boston am I looking for to geek out on my love of history?

We like this hotel. Mixed reviews on room size, so ask about that. We were on concierge level, which included breakfast and a well-stocked reception buffet.

There are DOZENS of hotels in Boston that are located right no/near the Freedom Trail, which is THE walking route for all things historic.

The neighborhoods you'd want are: Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market area or Downtown.

Park Plaza mentioned above is a bit off the Freedom trail, but not too far...

definitely explore Beacon Hill - both the town houses and the mansions past Louisberg Square.

Also make a visit to Lexington and Concord (we did by car so can;t comment on public transit) to see the historic sights there.

Marriott Long Wharf, Boston Harbor Hotel

What hotels are you looking at? Downtown Boston is pretty compact so if you stay somewhere in downtown or the waterfornt you can get to the historical parts pretty quickly. I do recommend the Langham Hotel as a somehwat affordable option close to the Waterfront, Custom House, Faneuil hall, Quincy market, etc. All are within a ten minute walk. In 20 or 25 minutes, you can walk to Charlestown to see the monument etc. The waterfront hotels (long Wharf Marriot, etc) are all very nice but are pretty expensive. The Langham is not cheap but it has got a sense of history that some of the newer hotels do not have. The Harborside Inn is neat as well. Depending on how long you are staying, you might consider renting a furnished apartment in the North End as well.

It is on the Harbor right next to the USS Constitution and museum (both free! - http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution/), steps to the Freedom trail and Bunker Hill Monument - there is an MBTA boat that takes you to the area near the Aquarium - great views for only $3.00! You can also easily walk to the city or MBTA train (less than 10 minute walk to North Station on the orange line) and/or it is also right next to the Paul Revere Park which leads you to the Charles River & Science Museum.

Several good restaurants a few blocks away in Charlestown (Tangerino, Olives, Figs), less than a 10 minute walk to the North End (lots of great restaurants and pastry shops).

I like that you get a kitchen so you can eat some meals in....

I loved our stay at the Omni Parker House - a lovely historic hotel and very well located.
