boston hotel close to train station
 

we are trying to find a hotel in boston in october that is close to the train station and under $200 @ night. so far i have found the wyndham tremont and the doubletree club. any feedback on either of these hotels or other suggestions would be appreciated.

From the hotels you list it sounds like you are looking for hotels close to South Station. All Amtrak trains and some of the commuter rail trains stop in stop (or start) in South Station. The area around South Station is perfectly safe but it is more a business area and not very exciting. The Back Bay train station also services commuter rail trains and most if not all Amtrak trains and is a much nicer, more interesting area. Check if the train you need stops in Back Bay. There are many nice hotels around there - the Colonnade always has specials, the Lenox is quite nice (more expensive), the Marriott and Westin are nice as well. The Sheraton is a huge convention center hotel (probably has good rates) and the Fairmount Copley is very nice but expensive. Check them all out - and ask for specials. I see them advertised in the paper all the time but book early because october is folliage time. All the hotels I've listed are a 5-10 minute walk to the train station. have fun!

I decided on what I wanted to do and found out where that was located in the city, looked for nearby Hotels, and explored other websites to find the best rate. I decided to park near a Hotel and walk around since my sites were centrally located.

If the "T" is what you need to get around then you could stay at the Hilton(was just there and it is nice)or the Sheraton in Back Bay. These hotels are about a two block walk to the Hynes Convention Center "T" stop. We(two women)walked the route day and night and felt realitively safe do so. Aug 10-13 we had a rate of $103 per night(w/o tax)for a double. If you join the Hiltons Honor's club at their website you can also get various upgrades at any of the Hilton properties. I am sure if you use the internet or the hotel service provided by the Boston tourist bureau you can find many nice hotels in your price range.

October is prime leaf-peeping time and also when the Head of the Charles takes place. The influx of students helps populate the hotels with visiting parents and October is also prime trade show/convention season. You certainly won't get the bargain rates that the other posters received in August, but if you check out some of the bargain websites (expedia and travelocity), you may be able to find a hotel in the $160-200 range. Back Bay is a little tougher area to find a good bargain due to its prime location, but it is probably the best area to stay in-along with Cambridge-due to its proximity to public transportation.
