Hi! I live in Boston and while I've never been inside, we always pass by this area when running errands. This might not be a fair comment but from the outside, it looks a bit down-trodden. My husband and I always comment that it's sad that they let it go the way they do because it is in a prime real estate location and why they don't just "clean it up" a little bit. Now again, this is just based on how it looks outside. I personally also don't feel that this is in the best location as a base unless you're a big Red Sox/Fenway fan and plan on attending games, but again, just my personal opinion. Have you looked at the reviews on Trip Advisor? It has very mixed reviews.
Boston is also notorious for expensive hotels but a couple of relatively moderate ones that I've heard/read about through my mom's group are the John Jeffries House in Beacon Hill and the John Hancock Conference Center off of Copley Square. My husband's cousin stayed there one time and although it is a bit dated but neutral, it didn't feel dirty or grungy at all - that was seveal years ago so I don't know if it's the same. Hope that helps.
