Use the Red Line to get to Harvard Sq.

Take the T commuter line from North Station to get to Salem. The most noteworthy thing in Salem is the newly renovated Peabody Essex Museum ( - one of the nicest small museums in the country. The rest of Salem is okay but I think Portsmouth NH and Newburyport MA are better examples of restored maritime communities.

Check out (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities) to see if they have any events or tours going on.

Other suggestions are the MFA - Museum of Fine Arts or the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Of course there's shopping on Newbury Street or Charles Street. Take a walk along the Esplanade - watch the crew teams practicing.

Take a cruise out in the harbor.

Explore the North End. Take a duck tour.

check out or for more ideas

Have a great trip.

Tons of stuff to do.

There is also an escorted culinary tour of the Northend.
In Salem, I think you'd also enjoy the House of 7 Gables (Hawthorne).
Have fun!

You could easily pass the day in the Harvard area. Harvard square is a very busy shopping hub with blocks and blocks of interesting stores and restaurants. There are some wonderful museums at Harvard, including the Peabody art musueum.
