Boston GTG Fringe Festival: a Pre-GTG walk through old & new Boston

Borrowing an idea from the Gothamites, I'd like to see if there's interest in a walking exploration of Beacon Hill and more, as an unofficial prequel to the Boston GTG on Friday, October 5.

The walk will start mid-morning (about 10:30), meandering though some of the most charming and historic streets on the Hill, discreetly peeking into windows and hidden gardens whenever possible. We'll make our way down to the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and eventually find a spot for a light lunch. Should be over and done by early- or mid-afternoon.

The walk will be easy to reach by public transportation, and decidedly informal. This won't be an athletic competition or an endurance test (think slow ramble, led by a Medicare-age fat guy). However, the route through Beacon Hill is hilly with uneven brick sidewalks and could be challenging for anyone with limited mobility.

If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected] . Details on where to meet, what happens if there's foul weather, etc., will be sent in late September.

(For info about the Boston GTG, see http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...servations.cfm )

Don, I'm interested. I'll be staying at an airport hotel the night before. Do you think there will be somewhere to stash my bag during the walk?. I'll probably take the Needham train out to Bobs from Back bay station afterwards.

Lucy, that would be wonderful if you could come. And I have a solution for you.

There's a facility at South Station Bus Terminal (next to the train station) called Package Express, and they will hold your bag for a small fee. Info at http://www.bostonexpressbus.com/mass...h-station.html.

So you could take the Silver Line from the airport directly to South Station, stash your bag, and take the Red Line to meet the walk -- just 2 stops away. Later that day, you can take the train from South Station to Needham. (All trains to Needham originate at South Station, then stop at Back Bay. By getting on at So Station, you're sure to get a seat.)

I would be interested, but unfortunately the time-line conflicts with my appointment (and I'm hoping it's the final one!) at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

What a nice idea! If I'm around, and I'm pretty sure I will be, is it okay if a local joins you?

lcuy, just to elaborate on the luggage storage facility at the South Station BUS terminal - it's located on the top floor (5th I think) of the terminal, where the rooftop parking lot is.

Here's a link with the phone number for Package Express. http://www.bostonexpressbus.com/mass...-station.htmlH

The only alternative that I know is the Rowe's Wharf water taxi service from the dock near the Hyatt at Logan. You can take a free bus from the terminals to the dock, and the Rowe's Wharf Service (there are others) is the only one that offers free luggage storage at Rowe's Wharf (that's where the Boston Harbor Hotel is located). The cost for the water taxi is $10.

I wish we could join but we probably won't be leaving Albany until about 11:00. We would have to leave at 6:30 AM to get to Boston by 10:30

Hi Don, I thought I wouldn't be able to get to the Boston GTG this year but this pre GTG walk would fit in with my plans.
Email on it's way..
