Boston/Cape Cod

Travelocity has a deal where you fly into Logan Airport and stay at the Howard Johnson Cape Cod. Has anybody done this. Do you rent a car and catch the ferry across? Just don't want to be sorry. We wanted to explore the Cape, but also want to do the Freedom Trail, Boston Common, Fanueil Hall. Thanks for any input.

Ckrut, Logan is in East Boston. The Cape is an hour south, over the Cape Cod Canal. Where Howard Johnson Cape Cods is I don't know- I've never heard of a Howard Johnson motel on the Cape. To catch the ferry to Provincetown, one must go to the waterfront, in South Boston. With no car when you arrive in P'town, you would be relegated to that town only.
I would suggest you look into the Travelocity deal a bit more closely!

Thanks capecodshanty. It did seem almost too good to be true. We'll do some further checking.

I think the Howard Johnson is in Yarmouth -
I have no idea the reputation of it, etc - but that location certainly would not help you as far as Boston, Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, or any of that - it would simply put you on the cape for a few days and like ccsanty said - how are they getting you from Logan to this motel or is that up to you - and then, how would you get from there to Boston for your few days of sightseeing there? Do they give you more details ? And if it is the one in Yarmouth, is that the part of the Cape you want to be on?

Take a look at the reviews on TripAdvisor for the Howard Johnson Cape Cod.

The packages state what's included (Flight & Hotel, Flight & Car, Flight & Hotel...)

Have you looked at the Priceline or Hotwire packages? Whenever I've booked a package with either, I've been able to rent a car after at a ridiculously low rate.

You would not need/want a car for your stay in Boston. Not only is driving around Boston not recommended, parking (during the day and overnight at a hotel) is exhorbitant.

You really have to comparison shop to determine whether Travelocity is offering a favorable "deal".

You would need a car to drive to Cape Cod. A ferry is involved only for getting to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket (and it would be easier to fly, especially in the summer months). It's expensive to take a car to either island (and reservations are essential, way ahead).

You actually can get to Cape Cod without a car - either the fast ferry or to Provincetown, but the problem is once you are there you can not get around w/out a car - you can also get a bus from Boston to the Cape, but again, once there you need a car -

Friends of ours when visiting us have flown into Boston, spent their days there sight seeing, then rented a car from location at Logan airport, one person taking the T over to get it (or the water taxi boat from Boston Harbor) , picks up the otheres and drives to the Cape for the days wanted there -

Flying to MV or Nantucket is Cape Air, and that is not cheap - better to go as a passenger on the ferry - car reservations in summer are hard to come by, almost impossible already to find anything still open on weeekends, ours were made months ago -if you decided you wanted a car on one of the islands, you'd be better to rent a jeep once you got there for a day or two.

thanks everybody. I think now we may just try to find a reasonably priced hotel near the airport with shuttle service from the airport and to a subway or bus line. any ideas? Thanks for all the good advice. You guys are great!

ckrut....If you decide to take the fast ferry tfrom Boston to Provincetown you can get around on the outer cape without a car if you are willing to take a Flex Bus. There is a (new last year) bus that regularly leaves Provincetown to Duart's Market in Truro and an easy connection to the Flex bus that services many locations on the lower/outer cape. So if you want to go to Wellfleet, for example, or perhaps the Visitor's Center of the National Seashore in Eastham, you can easily do that by bus. www.theflex.com and www.p-b.com for other locations.

Thanks yellowbyrd for the info about the flex bus. We have decided not to stay over on the Cape, but instead to find a reasonable hotel near the airport or downtown if there is such a thing, with easy access to public transportation. But we still would like to go over to Ptown or somewhere if time allows. We fly in Tuesday, late afternoon and fly back out Saturday later afternoon so are hopeful we can get out to see the National Seashore. Any suggestions for hotels near public transportation which have a shuttle to the airport would be much appreciated everybody. Thanks again so much for all your helpful info.

Do you need to stay by the airport? It's so easy to get into town, why not take advantage and stay where you can walk to and from each day you're here?

The Silver Line on the T (but it's a bus, not a subway) takes you from the airport into South Station for $2. From S.Station, you can connect to other T/subway lines to city hotels.

Just a correction - the waterfront for the fast ferry to P-town is not in South Boston as one poster said; it's right in front of the Aquarium. The fast ferry is great, only 90mins and you're there!
