Boston - Cape Cod

Hi- I am planning a trip to Boston next Thursday-Sunday to see my boyfriend who lives there. We were wanting to go to the Red Sox game on Friday night, but were really hoping to go out to Cape Cod on Saturday. My 2 main questions are about transportation & duration of the trip.
I have read a lot about the traffic/parking issues and looked into the 1.5hr ferry - but my boyfriend would prefer driving. I know that it is supposed to be about a 2-3hr drive, but I was wanting to get some advice on if it is absolutely a bad idea to drive, which ferry company to use, and getting around once you get there?
Also, we were originally thinking we would take the ferry in and spend the day in Provincetown and then go back that evening. I was starting to wonder if that would be enough time, or if we should go to any of the other towns and/or stay the night? If we drove we would maybe be able to see more other towns along the way? If anyone has any advice on what we ABSOLUTELY should do while we are there, I would really appreciate it! He is moving to Phoenix in June so this will be my last trip out there & I really want to get the Cape experience!
Thank you

To me, the Cape is about the beaches. I doubt it will be warm enough to spend the day at a beach but you could go exploring.

There's only one ferry from Boston and it goes into Provincetown. Ptown is a great place to spend the day, cute downtown with shops and restaurants and lots of interesting people. You could rent bikes and head out to Race Point Beach which is a favorite of mine.

Since it's before Memorial Day, traffic might not be too bad on a Sat. You could head to Chatham, again cute downtown, and hit up a couple of National Seashore Beaches. I'd plan on about a 2 hr drive.

Last summer we did a day trip on the fast ferry out to Provincetown. We had lunch first then rented bikes and rode out to the National Seashore. It was a fun way to spend a couple of hours (we rode on pretty much all the trails, and they add up to 9-10 miles). There is a National Park Service visitors center at Province Lands which has exhibits and a great view. Here's the bike map: http://www.cctrails.org/provbike.htm

We aren't shoppers so we didn't spend much time browsing the (many) shops in P-town. If you are, it's easy to spend a few hours doing that instead of biking.

You do know the ferry does not take cars, right?

And as far as Red Sox game, it is against the Chicago Cubs which seems to be one of the only opponents for which there are legitimate sellouts ahead of time this year. There was a story however about one of the major ticket brokers (Ace Ticket) having to sell some tickets below face value this year since Red Sox are stinking and other 2 major sports teams were in the playoffs (only Bruins remain now).

My suggestion - drive. Not sure what "the Cape experience" is - since I think of the Cape as a place to relax and go to the beach rather than sightsee.

I might consider leaving early Sat AM and making reservations for somewhere around Chatham. If you want, Sunday AM check out a beach (for walking, not swimming - it will be too cold). perhaps drive to Provincetown and head back to Boston.

Weather forecast is for rain for the next 7 days - but they are always wrong, especially that far in advance. But make back-up plans for staying in Boston if it really does rain.

Weather forecasts are often wrong, as Gail says. Today both Boston and Nantucket (where I live) were forecast to have rain. My wife is now working in the garden, and I am enjoying the warm sun coming in my kitchen window here on Nantucket.

Driving will not be a problem at this time of year, and it will be cold on the P-Town ferry, tho fine when you get there.

As a very general rule, the north side of the Cape along Route 6A is picturesque, as are the towns at the end of the Cape like Chatham and Eastham.

The area along Buzzards Bay from the bridge to Wood's Hole is also very picturesque IF you stay on the back roads.

The area on the south side of the Cape from the eastern side of Falmouth through Mashpee and Barnstable and Yarmouth are pretty honky tonky ON the main road. Back roads lead to many beautiful places.

US 6, right down the middle, is a boring superhighway.
