Boston/Acadia Itinerary
 

My husband and I have a week in August to travel, including travel days. We are looking for suggestions for seeing Boston and possibly Acadia... and anything in between that you may suggest.
Monday : Travel
Tuesday - Saturday : No plans yet
Sunday : Travel home

The biggest catch is that we are traveling with a 1-year-old, so the pace of the day needs to be taken into consideration. She can nap on the go, but out touring needs to come to an end around 6:30.

There's actually tons of stuff between Boston and Acadia. In fact, there are currently several threads here that address this in detail.

What kinds of things do you enjoy? That makes a big difference.

And if you haven't made hotel reservations, I'd do so immediately. It's high season in this area and things tend to book up.

Acadia needs to be booked soon for August. What's the budget per night? It might be easier to get Tues Wed Thur at Acadia rather than the weekend nights.

Are you planning to stay in Boston for 3 nights, then pick up a rental car to hit the road? Acadia is almost 6 hours with a stop for lunch.

What time do you arrive on Monday? Might be easier to pick up the rental car and head north. But not if you arrive Boston at say 4pm and will hit heavy traffic.

What time do you depart Boston on Sunday?

Given you don't have any firm destination plans, I would look for lodging that is going to be most comfortable for your family. My husband has never liked hotels so now we do air b&b or VRBO. You might check availability at motels/cottages like Glenmoore by the Sea in Lincolnville just north of Camden. Although on Rt 1, it sits back from the road with a variety of accomodations from motel room to cottages, large grassy area, pool, etc. Acadia would be a long day trip from this area.

One thing to keep in mind is that some of the ocean front places are out on points that add a lot of driving time to get anyplace. We just stayed near Pemaquid Point and it was about a 20 minute drive to Damariscotta/Rt 1.

The Rockland area is another area we like which might work for your family. There's an art museum, shops, classic car museum, winery, farmers market, easy hike to Owl's Head Light. Nearby Rockport has a beautiful park and marina that is ideal for picnicking or just enjoying the view (we watched kids having sailing lessons).

If you don't have clear plans about what you are going to see and do in Acadia, maybe enjoy some other place that isn't such a long drive.
