3 friends and myself are spending a week in boston and new england in march. we intend to spend a couple of days in boston then travel up into vermont.can anyone recommend some must sees and cheap places to stay. thanks

You may need to provide a bit more information - what are you hoping to get out of the trip? What types of things do you want to see? Then we can provide you with a bit more information.

I strongly recommend that you use the Fodors "search" function to read past posts about Boston and about he New England states you're interested in. These will give you some idea of others' "must sees" and accommodations, as a starting point.

Boston is a great city that is easy and manageable getting around. I'm talking about using public transportation, not driving. What are you interested in? For museums, there are the Museum of Fine Arts, Science Museum and Aquarium. There is tons of history in Boston. You can start out with the Freedom Trail, visit the Old North Church. Also, Bunker Hill and Old Ironsides in Charlestown. If it's not too cold, Boston is great for walking around, such as Beacon Hill, Newbury Street, the Public Gardens. Go to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market and Newbury Street for shopping. You can easily take the subway to Cambridge. I've never taken the Duck Tours but I kow that many posters on this board highly recommend it. You can ski in Vermont in March.. Do you have any locations picked out in Vermont? I'd recommend Woodstock or Burlington.

You can find some great hotel deals in Boston online and even better ones in Cambridge which is just across the Charles River. The Duck Tour is really a must do; lots of fun. I'd also shoot over to Salem, MA and see the House of Seven Gables and the witch museum! Rather than heading to VT, I'd head to the coast of Maine . . .unless you are a mountain enthusiast.

March weather can be pretty iffy. Be prepared for cold, dreary, overcast. If its sunny and warm (40's maybe) then you are lucky.

Are you going to be in Boston around St. Patricks Day? If so, then try to get tickets for some of the great Irish music events that will take place. The Chieftains (traditional music)always play Symphony Hall a few days before March 17. The Irish Tenors (showband type music - hokey but I adore Ronan Tynan) are usually performing also. Other less well known bands like the Saw Doctors (Irish rock band - really really really fun - appropriate for all ages. I am 40ish and every time I've gone to see them I am amazed at the age range literally from 21 to 70) will probably be in town. Or even the Drop Kick Murphy's if punk rock with bagpipes is your thing. No matter what your musical taste there is sure to be an event that would be appealing.

Usually there is an Irish movie festival that lasts for the entire month as well as art shows etc.

For a cheap place to stay in Vermont try the Golden Eagle in Stowe. You should be able to get a very decent room for around $120-$130. Its clean and well run and has an indoor pool. In Boston check out the Hilton website for deals on the Back Bay Hilton. Also have stayed at the Colonade and would stay again.
