Books to read for 1st time Charleston visit?

Not neccessarily tour guide books. I thought of Scarlett the sequel to GWTW.

What other books do you think?

One Fodorite recommended "Mrs. Whaley and her Charleston Garden" to me after I got back a few weeks ago.

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"

I hear the book is better than the movie....

There is a "cozy mystery" series by Laura Childs - I believe the first one is "Death by Darjeeling" that, tho there isn't too much to the plots, the author does pretty good with the downtown Charleston setting. Also, Dorothea Benton Frank's books are mostly set in the area. Also check out Eugenia Price - I believe that she has several that would apply. "Midnight..." suggested above actually takes place in Savannah, not Charleston. Also Pat Conroy's books - not necessarily Charleston - altho "My Losing Season" is about his time at the Citadel - are all very regional in flavor...as is his cookbook.

I highly recommend "Charleston" and the sequel "On Leaving Charleston"
