Booking 2 people per room vs 3 - good or bad idea??

We are planning a girls trip to Vegas. We will be bunking 3 people to a room. I notice that they charge additional fees (or increase their rates) if you have more than 2 people to a room. We were thinking of booking the reservation as two people per room. Do you think we could get away with it? I realize that they will only issue two room keys, but that is not a big deal. I'm just wondering if they have a way of checking up on that kind of stuff and what will happen if they find out. Anyone ever done this? Did you get away with it? If not, what happened? TIA!!!!

We book for the number who are actually staying in the room. It's not just the keys, you need towels, etc for 3 people. Of course, maybe the maids don't care how many towels they leave but since we are always honest we expect the room to be ready for us. It's a pain to call for more towels. We still usually only get 2 keys since we travel together but I've done shared rooms with people with different schedules and we all needed our own key.

Just tell the truth & ask for a rollaway bed. It may only cost you an extra $10 or so. This is a small price to pay for peace of mind and a guilt-free trip.

There are a couple of issues:

1) This is theft (sorry, but it is)

2) What if all they have left is a room with one king size bed? Do you mind all 3 packing in together? Or will someone sleep on the floor?

3) You won;t have enough towels and toiletries Will you ask for extras (after hiding why you need them)?

4) If they catch you it will be embarrassing (it would be MORTIFYING for me) and they will charge you the extra money

Why not reserve a room you can afford that you know will have enough beds?

Gee, if you're looking to save money and break all the rules, why not just not book at all, and sneak in and see if you can con a maid into opening a room for you and just use that. You might be able to find a maid as dishonest as you, and she'd take $10 to let you sleep there for free other wise. Worth a try, right?

Why on earth would three people traveling somewhere be SO cheap that they want to cheat the hotel and lie?

I agree that you should book for the actual number of people who will be using the room. I think this is less of an issue when it is 1 vs 2 in the room. Why this sometimes happens when my daughter and her friends plan a trip, say to the Keys, Las Vegas, etc., is that people in her age group take longer to commit to the trip, so there is confusion as to numbers right up to arrival. I think they pay up when they actually register.

Lately I have run into this charging for extra people thing in condos, ie, they charge per person over 2 in 2- and 3-bedroom properties. Frankly, I think they should just quote a higher rate to start with, as who would book a 3-bedroom place for only 2 people?

When we were at a Tahoe motel, there were notes in every room: if the maid finds a sleeping bag, you'll be charged $xx, don't remember now how much.

3 of you will share the cost, how much more expensive can it be? Why risk ending up in a room with one queen bed?

As for the toiletries... Only once in my lifetime did I see 2 shampoos in a room with 2 beds, and the irony of it all - I was there alone! The reservation was for one person!

I'm always amazed how people will ask on a public forum if it is OK to be dishonest. But then again with a name like Diva I guess she thinks rules don't apply to her.

How awful!

When I was in college a group of us went on a road trip to attend a conference at another college about 4 hours away. We booked a motel room for 2 people but it was really for 13 people. Yes, it was cramped.

Another time in college we went on a ski weekend. We booked a motel room for 2 and it was about 5 people.

ALthough now in my late 40's I couldn't fathom doing anything like that, at the time I felt like it was harmless fun. If we had gotten caught it would have been a funny tale to tell, not humiliating.

If money is critical I say go for it and call it an adventure. The maids dont care, If its a chain motel probably no one really cares.

"The maids dont care"

How do you know? More cleaning, more dirty towels, more stuff to work around, more dirty glasses.

How about seeing if you can get two adjoining rooms instead. A lot more space.

Perhaps we're missing a key point.

Many suggestions about making sure there are enough beds, or get adjoining rooms.

What if the 3 girls are very, very close friends and plan to share a king bed for some "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" fun?

I love how everyone is condemning this poor girl for asking a simple question. She asked for advice and all she got was sarcastic remarks.

To answer your question if you decided on doing this- you could get a standard room with two double beds, therefore that solves your sleeping issues. Second, if your staying at a large casino, they are so packed with people and so massive that I higly doubt you would get caught.

OMG, just pay the extra $10 or whatever it is. Or, reconfigure & do 2 to a room. When you win big in Vegas you'll be flush w/ cash!

We are not "condemning" her we just find it kind of hard to believe.

So PetHead, if I asked the best way to commit a murder without anyone finding out, should I not expect to see sarcastic remarks? Someone posted on a public forum saying, "Hey, I want to lie and cheat, can I get away with it?" What do you expect the answers would be?

(and before someone gets their panties in a bunch -- no I'm not comparing murder to sneaking an extra person into a room. But both are dishonest and (gasp) immoral things to do.)

I don't know if you can "get away with it" or not.

I'm sure someone has done this, but I would never myself. It is dishonest and embarrasing if you are caught.

Worse that happens (I assume) is they find you out & make you pay the additional fees that you should have paid in the 1st place.

Are you going to hide the 3rd person's suitcase? Never all leave the room at the same time so the hotel personnel does not notice? Share the keycard and towels meant for 2 among 3?

Toilet paper and paper towels have become so expensive -- hand soap too. Does anyone have any good suggestions how to steal my supply from restaurant restrooms without getting caught so I don't have to buy them? It would be a nice savings!

Great idea Patrick. Bring a resealable baggie with you into the restroom then pump the liquid dispenser into the baggie. The tissues that pop out of a slot in the vanity...reach up under the counter and you can pull the box out. For the paper towels, just wave your hand back and forth in front of the infrared for an hour or so and you should exhaust the supply.

Put all this stuff in the valet bag located in the closet in your room. Add a few washcloths just in case there is a leak. Well, take a towel too--if the cloth is gone they no longer have a set so they don't care. Oh yeah...the shower curtain and a couple of those nice new energy saving light bulbs too. Cool

My guess is that you have a good chance at getting away with it and you would not be the first who has tried. And I will admit that it sounds like something I might have thought of doing at about age 21 - no idea of your age. Now it is not even a tactic I would consider.

So take the high road and act mature and pay for the extra person.
