Many people booked smoking and raise h*** when they check-in that they reserved or want a non-smoking room.
Ditto with King, or Double, or what-have-you.
I have seen people throw fits at the front desk that they absolutely, positively KNOW they booked a Double when the itinerary says King. Of course many of them probably just decided to take others on the trip, or the double room was more expensive so they booked a king knowing they would do this upon arrival.
Happens ALL the time.
As others have said, GET THERE EARLY.
That's how you improve your odds in these situations.
Since I travel alone 75% of the time, I tell the front desk to assign me whatever they have, no matter what I booked. Often they are grateful.

starrsville: You probably didn't mean to address your comment to me (at least I don't think so) since I never mentioned anythiing about bed sizes double/queen/king. I only posted about want2go not understanding how things work . . . . .

Marriott did this to us last year, and my husband is an elite member. We were delayed and didn't get to our hotel until 11:00 PM and, yup, no double bed rooms. One king bed for three of us. We were SOL because it was late, conention in town, and apparently other guests got the rooms before us.
We went to our room ready to accept it, and the front desk called and offered us a 2-double smoking room. I wasn't thrilled but it was better than 3 in a king.
The front desk was really not helpful, nor all that polite. I was really ticked off, but so tired that I figured I had to tough it out.
As others have said, no guarantees.

OO...
"OMG" yes I do agree WE are saying the same thing...that is why I said earlier...
"This IS what I'm talking about!!!"
Again, for the record... I may be wasting my breath here...
this is my beef...
The hotel telling someone (me)we cannot confirm a room with 2 beds for the 4 people in your reservation EQUALS telling someone with a reservation for 1 person they cannot GTD their room will have a bed in it at all. Does that make more sense? It is the hotel implying they will not have any place to lay your head.
(Too many of you have gotten wrapped up in that word GTD. Nothing in life has a GTD... not even for the hotel to have a room for you at all! That is a basic truth of life... CYA or not)
I'm sorry if you don't get what I'm saying. IMHO, very simply, a hotel should be able to say that we book a reservation... you get a place to lay your head. It is their "expertise"... giving people a place to put a pillow.
This is not a choice... a choice would be... O/F, smoking/nonsmoking... KING vs. QUEEN.
Have you ever been asked... do you want your room to have a bed in it? That is sort of a basic requirement... A place for the traveler to sleep... an essential... yet implied part of your reservation.
So, they took a reservation for FOUR people. ??? I didn't take a gun and force them to! They gladly took it.
I may not ever be able to explain it to those reading here.
And to all your benefit...
I'm not going to try anymore.
Here's wishing you ALL a place to lay your head when you arrive at your next hotel reservation!

Well, here's what happened to us.
We booked a room for two people at the Onyx Hotel in Boston (a Kimpton property), several months ahead. Until then, we were very impressed with Kimpton properties and had another upcoming reservation at their Hotel Monaco in Seattle.
Anyway, we booked a one night stay the night before a seminar. We live only 40 miles from Boston, but wanted to wake up in the city and the Onyx was only steps from the Fleet Center.
We arrived around 8PM and were given our room key. The penthouse floor! When we got to the room, it was one of the most beautiful hotel rooms I've ever seen! It was on a corner of the building with huge windows and beautiful views. There was a full kitchen (gorgeous with granite counter tops), a table and chairs, two easy chairs - and a fold out sofa bed. This was beautifully made up with tons of huge pillows. But, a sofa bed is a sofa bed, with those bars and a thin mattress. There was a connecting door, so I'm guessing this room was the living room/hospitality room of a suite.
Of course, a phone call to the front desk was met with "we are fully booked".
After contacting the General Manager, we were offered a complimentary night and the assurance that he would contact the General Manager at the Monaco in Seattle to ensure our room preference.
When we checked in at the Monaco in Seattle, the corner room with jacuzzi we booked was "not available". There was a lovely "apology" card in the room.
A couple of months later, when we phoned the General Manager at the Onyx to book our "complimentary" night, we were informed that he had been "transferred" and no one else had the authority to book our complimentary night.
We only stay in Kimpton hotels now when they come up on Hotwire and Priceline.
I completely agree with want2go that you should be able to book a King, Queen, two beds, whatever, especially in a large hotel with a computer system.
I find TripAdvisor very helpful for hotel reviews.
