Boise City
 

Hey Okies,
I'm planning a road trip up 287 that could possibly take me through Boise City, where I would spend one night. Any ideas on where to stay and a good place to eat dinner? I'm just looking for a comfortable evening and maybe an interesting tidbit of history, scenery, etc.

Boy Jayne, that's tough. I'm not too familiar with the panhandle. For basic facts,

My only interest in the area is the Black Mesa State Park; it is the highest point in Oklahoma, on the very corner with Colorado and New Mexico.

Thanks, designmr. My atlas indicates that Bosie City is along a scenic route, so it might be at least a little more than flat land as far as the eye can see. The trip is from Dallas to Yellowstone and it looks like cutting through Oklahoma on 287 up to Lamar, Colorado will save some time compared to going the "usual" way, which is through Raton, New Mexico. I think the tradeoff is missing some mountain scenery, however. Do you have any idea how desolate of a drive it will be up 287? (I already know what to expect in Texas!)

I have no idea what it's like in the panhandle. Most of my experience is with Oklahoma cities. Just expect more rugged plains. Even the highest point, the aforementioned Black Mesa, by virtue of its name, indicates flat.

All I know is that in the eastern part of the panhandle, in the town of Beaver, is the World Cow Chip Throwing Contest, where furthest-tossed dried...dung... wins. Sounds like fun, huh? ;)

Have a good time in Yellowstone. See if you can make Old Faithful surprise a squirt.

Guess I'll just have to discover the wonders of the Oklahoma panhandle and see for myself. Gosh darn it, looks like I'll miss Beaver's Chow Chip contest, though! Oh well, Old Faithful will just have to do, instead! ;) Based on the mileages, the first night's stop will definitely be either Boise City or Lamar, depending on how we feel at the time.
