Bodie, CA and Mono Lake

Hello. Working on planning out a roadtrip from SF to Colorado, leaving soon, and would like to spend the first night near Bodie ghost town or Mono Lake. I am running into trouble with Road closures on both the 108 and 120 and wondering what the alternate route to Mono Lake would be.. Or if it would even be worth it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as Ive been searching the web to no avail. :(

the only practical way you can get there is up via hwy 88 and down 395. (depending on exactly when you are traveling you could take hwy 50 but it is going to be closed for a couple of weeks in the middle/end of May). That would be a crazy detour IMO -- but its up to you.

The only accommodations "near" Bodie are in Bridgeport.

We were there just 2 weeks ago, and the access to Bodie was closed. Except for the courthouse, Bridgport offers no reason to stay overnight (restaurants, charm). We thought it was kind of a dump. We had planned to sleep somewhere along 395 (Bishop, Mammoth, etc) but did not find anyplace we liked - so we headed on to South Lake Tahoe & stayed there. We took the Carson Pass/88 over the Sierras - and there was a lot of snow on portions of this pass.

Make sure Bodie State Park is open. Bodie is at fairly high altitude so the snow stays for a long time.

Also Highway 50 from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe will be closed from May 11 to about Memorial Day.

The road into Bodie from the highway is unpaved. If you're in a rental car, the agreement may exclude driving on gravel roads.

Thank you all so much for the replies. Decided this would be a much better seperate trip in a few months when the snow has melted away.
