Boat trip to Dry Tortugas
 

My wife and I have visited Key West many times and are going down again next week. We are thinking of taking the boat (Yankee Freedom) over to the Dry Tortugas. This time of year the weather should be great. It is about $120 per person, is it worth the expense. Anyone made the trip? Let me know what you thought of it. Love the food at Blue Heven and 7 Fishes.

My husband and I loved the Dry Tortugas. The snorkling was very nice and we found the fort to be quite interesting. But, the boat trip is about as much fun as taking the bus.

If you can possibly afford the plane ride, jump all over that.

The Tortugas are stunning but the boat ride will suck the life out of you.

It's been 14 years since we did this....BUT...I loved the airplane ride to the Dry Tortugas. The view from the air is spectacular - shipwrecks, large sea life, etc.

I agree the boat ride is long and not very exciting, sit out back if you can. If would could have swung the $ for the plane we would have. All-in-all anyway you go it's worth the trip. The snorkeling is very good, the fort is cool and I would go again.

The only part of the trip that was a chore for me was the trip back to Key West on the Yankee Freedom. Two hours and I couldn't wait for it to be over.

If you go take advantage of the tour, but then try to make three loops around the island; once inside the walls of the fort to get an idea of its construction, etc. Once on top of the battlements because the views are so good. And once around on the top of the moat. But if the sand bridge has re-established itself since Wilma, walk out to Bush Key, the bird sanctuary. And many people snorkel out there, but I preferred just swimming off one of the beaches.

Thank you to all who responded. I think I will investigate the airplane ride over if we go.

We took the boat to the Dry Tortugas and it was quite choppy - but then we love being out on the water. Lunch was provided and we had a great time swimming at the beach to right of the docking area. The plane trip was faster but didn't offer as much time on the island. Have a great time.
