Block Island Day Trip
Is a day visit sufficient for Block Island? How does one get around the island?
|
Are you going from Montauk or Connecticut? Montauk you can't bring a car but from Connecticut you can. If you dont bring a car you can get a taxi for an island tour.
|
A day would be ok, but Ipossibly the ferry rides back and forth would eat up too much of that time. The town part is all within walking distance from the pier. If you want to see other parts of the island, a bike is great: can you bring a bike with you? There is a bike and car rental place on the island. |
We would be coming from Newport where we'll be staying (late June). Just trying to figure out if we require an overnight stay in Block Island or if day trip is sufficient.
I'd love to rent a bike and tour the island that way. Problem is I'll be 6 mo's pregnant at that time, and not sure if that's feasible. If not, we'll do the taxi.. Any recommendations for restaurants or must sees? Thanks! |
I'd stay overnight just for the fun of it; and like the other posters said, the ferry rides will eat up a chuck of the day. The Spring House is fun. http://www.springhousehotel.com/

Must sees? I'd tour the Lighthouse.

There are a couple of issues here. The particular boat that goes from Newport is quite slow. This came up last year for someone.Unless they have changed vessels, the ride is over 2 hours each way. I would not want to be 6 months pregnant and on this particular boat....

You bring up a good point, and in fact when I looked up the ferry schedule, it does not commence until June 28 (we will be there one week prior).
So thinking of going out of Narragansatt which runs more regularly and has a high speed option (30mns). I'm assuming it's an easy drive from Newport to Narragansatt. |
the best way to get to block island from RI is from Point Judith and there is a fast ferry now. The ride on the regular ferry used to be a little rough depending on sea conditions. I love BI, but not from a "must see" aspect (unless you can bike around the island) but more from a "must feel" aspect- it's just a very easy going relaxing place. If you go, I'd suggest staying the night.

You do also have the option of taking the ferry from Quonset, RI to Martha's Vineyard. This is a fast ferry and the trip is 90 minutes. The drive from Newport to this ferry would be less than 30 minutes, whereas the drive to Narragansett would be approx 50 minutes or more if you hit beach traffic
