Black Canyon of the Gunnison East Portal Road

We will definitely go to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison near Montrose, CO
in April 2014 and will drive the south rim road, but want to also do the East Portal Road from the top. We know the East Portal Road is closed in winter. Any idea when it opens for travel? What happens after you get to the bottom of the very steep road? Do you drive back up, or is there a way out at or near the bottom?

We are looking forward to a wonderful trip in Beautiful Colorado.

Many thanks

When does East Portal Road open?

Typically East Portal Road is open by mid-April, and closes beginning to mid-November.

The only road access to the river is the East Portal Road, so you'll be driving back up.

Thanks, I was afraid of that, but the scenery is great so that will be okay. We may be a little early anyhow since we are due to arrive on April 6.

Mid-April is very dependent on the amount of winter snow. AND since this has been one of our snowiest winter in at least decade or so, I doubt if the road will be open before May. If there was a way out at the bottom of the road, then you would have another way in. Unfortunately it is back out the same road.

Thanks again. We'll hope to do the South Rim Road and if that is not open we'll find something else in the area. Can't control Mother Nature.
