Birthday Meal and Cake for CMU Student

My child is a first year student at CMU and will be celebrating a birthday soon. Does anyone know of a good restaurant that will be able to deliver a meal for 5 people to the CMU dorms? How about Prantl's Bakery for birthday cake? Any other suggestions?

Which CMU?
Central Michigan U.
Central Missouri U.
Carnegie-Mellon U.

(It's CMU Pittsburgh)

Wheel Deliver is a multi-restaurant delivery service www.wheeldeliver.net

Lots of choices ... it has been a few years, but I'd recommend Ali Baba, Napolis, or Star of India.

Never tried Prantl's, sorry.

saka: I have a Junior at CMU and when he was a freshman I went through the same thing. As a matter of fact I have a freshman whose Birthday is Friday (at another school) so I have been on the same wave length.

What I did was send a package with cookies I made for him to share with his friends. I would think your son/daughter might enjoy money and they can go out with friends for a Birthday meal. If you don't want to send too much they can even have pizza. Getting out of the dorms I think is a lot more fun and appreciated. CMU is surrounded by some great places to eat within walking distance. I have sent my son a Friday's gift card on a few occasions and they take the bus (it is included in their tuition) to The Waterfront and eat at Friday's. Both my kids would much prefer to have a reason to eat off campus than stay in the dorms.

The other thing that would be fun is to send your s/d a gift card to Coldstones in Squirrel Hill. Awesome ice cream and it could be a fun treat for them for their Birthday.

I am happy to help in any other way I can.

Hi:

Prantl's is a great choice, I don't know if they deliver. Does CMU Food Services offer a delivered cake? Notre Dame had this when I was there and I'd assume other schools do as well. Looking at the wheeldeliver options... Mad Mex is great mexican. Spice Island has really yummy Indian food and Fuel and Fuddle has good wings and bar food type stuff. Kaya is also good. Happy birthday to your son or daughter.

Hi:

I just read the other response and a gift certificate to something at the Waterfront is a great idea. PF Chang's, Pizzeria Uno, Mitchell's Fish Market, Dave & Buster's (that would be fun!), Rock Bottom Brewery, or Bravo are some of the options.

These are great ideas!! Being from Hawaii I was concerned about them going out in the cold for a meal, but maybe it will be a good change for them. I think I will go with the gift card idea and pick a nice place on the waterfront, along with a gift card from Coldstone Creamery. I appreciate all the responses. Thank you so much!!

saka- I am glad I could help. I am sure your s/d will appreciate your thoughtfulness and it sounds like they will have a great time. And I thought a 10 hour drive from CMU is far - wow, Hawaii.

It's sort of an empty feeling when they first go away to school and you don't celebrate Birthdays together. It's part of all of the letting go's isn't it?

Prantls is fantastic. Their burnt almond torte is my absolute favorite dessert.

And about the cold...by now, your child is probably used to it, even after coming from Hawaii! :) Lucky for them this has been an incredibly mild winter.
