Birthday dinner in Gettysburg

We will be in Gettysburg for just one night and it is my husbands birthday. i would love to find a nice place for dinner. Not too touristy. ( Dobbins leaps to mind..but maybe the food is really good. Is it?)
I would also love suggestions about what are must sees, other than the battlefield.
Thanks.

We go to the Dobbins for our special events but everyone's tastes are different. We actually go to the downstairs Pub! Depending on the time of year, soaking in the battlefield is your best bet. On a quiet day you can easily picture the horrible scene. There is a beautiful new Visitor Center and hopefully you will visit after the Cyclorama is fininshed restoration.

Another vote for the Dobbin House Tavern - absolutely! Eat in the restaurant part for a great dinner.

We are travel to Gettysburg all the time. The Dobbin House is very over rated...lots of bus tours, very noisy, very crowded and marginal food at best. Very touristy. There are much better places to dine espically for a birthday. As a frequent visitor and picky eater here are my top three picks:

Herr Tavern - excellent food, wonderful service in a very historic building. When making reservations ask for a table on the enclosed porch for a view of the open field and sunsets.

Cashtown Inn - On the outskirts of Gettysburg, but very easy to get to. Not only is this another very historic building used as the Confederate HQ at the start of the battle many of the generals and officers stayed here, but the food & service is also wonderful.

The Blue Parrot Bistro - located in town by the James Gettys Hotel. I cannot say enough about this restaurant - excellent food outstanding desserts in a very artsy dining room. This is also in a very historic building...well most building have a story in Gettysburg. This is also a wonderful choice.

The big must see is the new visitors center. It just opened in April...get there as early as possible as it gets very crowded. You can also hire a liscensed battlefield guide at the tour center. He will drive your car and give you a personal tour of whatever you want to learn about or just give you the day by day tour. It is 45.00 for two hours (I think). There is also the Eisenhower Farm, which you have to take the tour bus from the visitors center - very beautiful to see. The Eisenhower house is pretty much as they left it when they lived there. There is the Pioneer railroad lines which is a scenic rail tour - very nice way to spend a few hours. Also you can take a ride out to SAchs bridge which has a lot of history. It is a beautiful covered bridge, very tranquil, and very Haunted!! Lots of fun. You also must see the Shriver house tour and the Jenny Wade house by the Holiday Inn Battlefield. There is tons of stuff to do!

A great place for breakfast is The Avenue and for lunch is The Pub and Ernies Texas Wiener Lunch - sounds funny but it is incerdible!

We just love this town, we go once a month...it's a great place. If you have any other questions I sould be happy to help you.

<< lots of bus tours, very noisy, very crowded and marginal food at best. Very touristy>>

Now I feel badly that I seconded the Dobbin House, but we have never run into any of those problems any of the times we have been there, and we enjoyed the food each time. (well, I guess the gift shop could qualify as touristy, but I've never bought anything there ) The building is an old stone house built over a spring which flows through the Tavern on the lower level.

However, the others sound great too, so our next trip we might give one a try. Thanks for the suggestions Annabel.

We just ate at the Dobbin House recently. It was horrible....

During the spring and summer months it is very very touristy and very very busy. Even if you make reservations, expect to wait. Lots of groups and lots of busses of people going to the restaurant for dinner. I have eaten in both the Spring house Tavern and the Dobbin house. We have had marginal food at best there but our last visit, all of our salads were full of sand (lettuce not washed) the chicken was dry and over cooked. I can tolerate over cooked chicken but unwashed sandy lettuce is just unacceptable. The waitress did not seem to care either.

I think it's so popular due to it's location, which is right in the center of everything. However you can google the restaurants I mentioned above, and you will find it worth the extra 10 minutes to get there.

We have also been to the Dobbin house/Spring TAvern in the "off season" late fall/winter and it was much better. We actually prefer the Tavern downstairs in the winter.

Has anything changed much with these suggestions? We are taking a family trip to DC in a couple weeks and will be going through Gettysburg.
