Birthday Dinner - Denver
Looking for suggestions for birthday dinner for DH and myself next month. We will be staying at Residence Inn on Champa Street. Looking for both great food and atmosphere. I won't say price is "no" object, but entrees in the $50 - 75 range would be ok. As far as cuisine goes: no Asian, no Mexican.
Oh, and the dinner would be on a Monday, and I know that this is sometimes a night that restaurants are closed.

Several years ago, we celebrated our anniversary at Fruition Restaurant and it was very nice. It was a Saturday night, one day before the big Democratic convention opened and we had to call and say that we would be ½ hour late for our reservation. Not only did they handle that with aplomb, but when we got out of our taxi to enter the restaurant, the host greeted me by name, even though we had never been there nor had he ever laid eyes on me. Apparently Fruition is still doing very well, because they are #1 in Tripadviror's rankings out of 833 restaurants in Denver.

Fruition has a very good reputation. It's a nice little 'boutique' restaurant on 6th Ave. (I have not been there myself, though.)
We like Barolo Grill on 6th Ave, Strings on 17th, and Avenue Grill on 17th. All would be cab rides from your hotel.
Or Capital Grille on Larimer would be walking distance. http://www.thecapitalgrille.com/loca...enver/main.asp
Also probably walking distance is the Chophouse (less romantic, though).

I was in Denver in the late '70s and we ate in a restaurant that I think was called The Vault.
It was a former bank and you dined in the actual vault.
I think I remember it being nice and the food good.
Things change.

You are probably referring to The Broker, downtown on 17th Street.

We haven't been there for years. I recall it had good prices and mediocre food and service. Could be much better now, since it apparently has survived.

Love Fruition and Barolo Grill. Both just topnotch. I don't know if Luce and Mizuma have "made it" but our meals there were also outstanding. Elway's at Cherry Creek. It really isn't just a steakhouse--it is outstaning cuisine and service.

Deb, you will be next door to the Cherry Creek Elway's at our Denver GTG, so you can check it out. I am personally not a fan of it.
I especially hate places that charge huge prices for entrees PLUS you pay for a potato or another vegetable to have a full meal. That is just a practice that ticks me off, and I avoid those restaurants. Also, when we were there, it was full of aging ex-jocks and trophy/cheerleader type 'girls'. Seemed like a sleazy/cheesey scene, but that was just one visit and we haven't gone back.

And, probably needless to say, I don't agree at all with the assessment of Elway's. Anything is possible on a given day, but painting with a broad brush. I don't believe I have EVER seen that. BUT it is NOT a bar hangout for the young folks where they take over a bar. It is a more mature crowd that are regular customers.

I think Elway's at Cherry Creek is better than the downtown Denver location. Panzano's is also one of our favorites and agree about the grilled caesar salad. We recently ate at The Broker on 17th street for the first time, and it was better than I expected. Can't go wrong with the free, unlimited shrimp cocktail! The booths in the old vault are fun, and the original Japanese cherry wood and crystal chandeliers are still used.

We eat at Fruition at least once a month and love it. Note that the vegetarian dish is almost always outstanding. We also dine at Barolo Grill frequently and like it as well. Luca's use to be really good but we've been disappointed the last few visits. It feels like they've gotten into a bit of gastronomic rut.

The steaks are great, but you have to order each side dish separately and they easily feed two/three which makes it pricey and a bit of a waste if you want several different sides and there are only two people. Also find attitude a problem. On our last visit, the valet was the only person who seemed to care that we were there. The crowd is usually older arguably almost ancient. We certainly fall into the senior category but sometimes I even feel like a youngster. On any given night you will also find the jock wanna be's and the cougars.
There is a new restaurant in Cherry Creek North called Le Merise on 3rd Street. Typical French bistro. It may not be special enough for your celebration but keep it mind for any future outings.
All the suggestions are good and it'll be just a matter of choosing what best suits you.
