Bilmar Beach Resort at Treasure Island
Has anyone recently stayed at the Bilmar Beach Resort? If so can you tell me about the hotel? Is it nice? I've read many mixed reviews on the hotel and thought I would get some opinions here if available. Thank you!

I feel vaguely irresponsible about this because I've recommended the Bilmar because Joan has recommended it. I haven't actually been in it. She lives on TI. This is where a new Sloppy Joe's went in, I think only the second one, other than the one in Key West. I like this location on TI in terms of being able to walk to the shops and restaurants across Gulf Blvd. But I don't know what the Bilmar's like inside.
Joan, where are you?

Hello! Except for a couple visits to Sloppy Joe's, I haven't been inside the Bilmar in years, but I can tell you this: they have been doing renovations, are freshly painted, and there's a newer wing with balconies - reserve your oceanfront room there instead of the original wing, which has big windows but no balconies. It is in a nice location, walking distance to restaurants and shops. Try Karim's Bistro at the hotel next door for Moroccan and Continental cuisine, and the Floridian for great Cuban sandwiches, oh and my favorite pizza joint, Original Pizza, is right across the street. Have fun!

Hi LilllKitty
We just returned from Treasure Island and Key West. We walked past the Bilmar and it looked like a nice place however, I have to recommend a gulf front room at the Island Inn where we stayed. It is a few minutes walk from the Bilmar and lovely rooms. What was important to us is that we like to hear the surf at night by leaving our doors open. At the Island Inn you can do that as you are closer to the water. The Bilmar, I believe, is too far from the water to be able to do that. That stretch of beach is very, very wide and although you are gulf front you are a long way from the water. Check out the Island Inn at: http://www.islandinnresort.com/
The previous poster, Joan, cannot recommend her business but I can...If you get a room with kitchen check Mid Peninsula in St Petersburg for the best and freshest fish ever! They do have a web site.
