Billings (Beartooth Highway) or Bozeman for Yellowstone NP?
Deciding if Beartooth Highway is worth the increased rental car price. Going to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons 8/30/22 to 9/6/22. Starting either in Billings or Bozeman and staying 5 nights in Yellowstone NP before driving on down to GT to stay the last two nights before flying out of Jackson Hole. Have a short window to change current flight/rental car from Billings to Bozeman. Both flights land about noon/1pm. Staying first night at Roosevelt Lodge. Deciding if Beartooth Highway is worth the extra money and time or better off to just fly into Bozeman with shorter drive.
Thanks for any input from anyone that has driven Beartooth Highway. Thank you. |
I can't judge for you whether its worth the extra money but the Beartooth Highway is a spectacular drive.

I've only stayed in Cody (highly recommend it) and Jackson but I've heard Bozeman is a cool university town.

The Beartooth Highway is worth seeing, especially if you already have your flight booked into Billings. Additionally, it will take you across the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone to get to Roosevelt Lodge (great for spotting wildlife, and a really beautiful part of the park). Red Lodge is a great spot to stop for lunch, etc. before driving the highway. It won't get dark until almost 10:00p.m. that time of year, so you will have plenty of daylight to check out the scenery.

In case you're interested, West Yellowstone is a nice small town (West entrance to the park on edge of town) to stay in. It has several good restaurants & a deli for picnic box lunches, lodging, small shops and also a few attractions such as the Wolf & Grizzly Bear Discovery Center, a local museum and I-Max. We enjoyed our stay there.

I realize I'm late posting here, but agree about a stop in Red Lodge and taking the Beratooth. Charming town, even with its popularity. As a bit a triva, the Red Lodge Chamber of Commerce used to celebrate the spring re-opening of Beartooth Highway by sponsoring a roadside open bar made of snow. That was in the 60's. My how times have changed.
