Biking with kids in Ouray, Colorado
We are heading to Ouray in August, and trying to decide if we should bring bikes. Are there easy trails in the area? Is the town bike friendly?

Our daughter is 8 and can ride about 10 miles (here our trails are relatively flat, though) - are there rides we could enjoy with her?

Hi Buttercup. No first hand expierence but from my handy Colorado Guide:

Paved: the Uncompahgre RiverWay, a 3 mile trial from Ridgeway town park to the state park. Inside the park are 4 more miles of paved trails.

Dirt:River road(city rds 23 & 17), realtively flat 10 mile dirt road from Ouray to Ridgeway
For more information try Ouray Mtn Sports 970-325-4284

Me I would always bring my bike anyplace in Colorado!

Kima,
Thanks for the info - we're bringing the bikes.

One more question - what handy Colorado Guide do you have. I'm looking for a good one.

Thanks

"The Colorado Guide" clever name eh?
By Bruce Caughey & Dean Winstanley

on my second edition though now rather dated 1997, they may well have a newer version. Is been a great resource for me.

I'm not sure what you mean by bike friendly. Ouray is a small town, but except for the small downtown area, there are few streets. The main street out of town to the south is very steep. And don't forget that the altitude will make it more difficult. I don't think Ouray is a great place for light biking. It is in mountain biking category. I do not think you will find flat bike trails there. And if you did, why don't you rent a bike in town rather bringing the bikes along. It is pretty flat going north from Ouray to Ridgeway.
