Biking to Sonoma Wineries?
Hi,
We will be staying at Trojan Horse for the weekend at the end of September. They have told us they have bikes available and was wondering if anybody had recommendations on the best wineries to get to from there and also how crazy the traffic is. |
I've stayed at the Trojan Horse B&B but I can't imagine biking to vineyards. Perhaps it's possible to reach a few, but with so much ground to cover, I'm guessing it's not advisable. (I could be wrong, but I know I could never bike to my favorite vineyards from there.)
Trojan Horse is an easy bike ride to Sonoma Square, however. Enjoy! |
Thanks for the advice - haven't ever been to Sonoma, just Napa. Anybody have advice for wineries that are close to Trojan Horse? I love the ones that have wine you can't get anywhere else or ones w/great tastings. Been on enough tours...just want to drink it!!

We rented bikes (8 of us) from a bike shop in Sonoma and rode to 4 different wineries and it was a blast. There is a bike trail that runs through some nice scenery and the only traffic we encountered was leaving the bike shop and getting on the trail. We rode to Ravenswood, Buena Vista, Castle and one other which I can't remember. I don't know where the Trojan Horse is in relation to the wineries but if it isn't too far, go for it! I think we had to ride 4-5 miles or so to get to the first place. The ride was easy though. We went on a Saturday in October and it was one of the best days of the trip. Have fun!

You should easily be able to bike to Sebastiani and Buena Vista. I didn't know about the 'bike trail'. Why not contact the Visitor's Bureau? They can give you wine maps as well as other information. Sonomavalley.com

From the Trojan Horse you can easily bike over to the town square. Then head north about 2 blocks and you'll intersect the paved trail. It parallels
W.Spain St and crosses Sonoma east to west. No wineries directly accessed by the trail, yet it is a pretty ride. Get a good map of the streets with winery locations. Stick to the east side of town (less traffic on the side streets). You should easily be able to bike to Sebastiani and Ravenswood. Futher east it's a nice ride out to Buena Vista, Gundlach Bundschu, Bartholomew Park and MacRostie. I'm sure your hosts will have good directions. R5 |

Ummm... I'd be much more concerned about the ride back to the T Horse after some serious wine "tasting". Does sound like fun though!

Here you go, Faina.
Well, they could leave the driving to Kal,beachbum http://www.jokemonkey.com/minibike.php R5 |

Hmmmm, a DUI on a bike....hadn't thought about that. Maybe the exercise will work off the alcohol content...
|
If you want to beat that, here in KY they arrested a guy TWICE for riding his horse into town drunk! If I were going to bike in Sonoma, I'd pick a weekday. If you've only done Napa, you'll be pleasantly surprised how much nicer the traffic situation is in Sonoma.

DUI or DWI on a bike is a serious thing in wine country. Maybe a year or two ago, an attorney nailed a cyclist while driving intoxicated in the napa/sonoma/yountville area somewhere. I searched and couldn't find the article to share.
Anyway, we're all far more careful than the next guy, right? No lectures. Enjoy. We'll be local in Mid-September. We're taking the bikes & we'll post details after. Surely, somebody will beat us to it . . . |
"an attorney nailed a cyclist while driving intoxicated in the napa/sonoma/yountville area somewhere" - so this is why Kal was off Fodor's for a while!!
|
Was the lawyer or biker drunk?
Or would "drunk lawyer" be redundant? Thank goodness for maturity, taxis and designated drivers. O:)[-o< Nobody wants to hit me while I'm on a bike...I'm WAAAAY over their deductible. |
