I've done it, and I'm about the least coordinated/athletic person I know. We rented from Fisherman's Wharf. It's a great 1/2 day excursion (but I guess that depends how fast you want to get where you're going). It's not too far, the first part (through SF) is flat, until you actually have to ride up to the bridge itself. The bridge is windy, but not difficult. Then it is largely downhill to Sausalito. We had a group of 4 girls (including a 13 year old) and 1 guy. The guy got a little bored, as the girls were not interested in racing.
We rode through and stopped at the Palace of Fine Arts. Sausalito has shopping and eateries. The ferry ride was easy and not expensive.
Very nice outing. I'd say it's a 3 on a scale of 1-10 (10 being difficult) as far as the outing goes.
