Biking from Sausalito over GG
 

My daughter and date are planning on riding over GG Bridge from Sausalito into city

I have told her I think its smarter to do it the other direction- seems to me there is a
BIG hill before getting on the bridge-
any opinions???

Also I think they can only rides bikes on a specific side of bridge- am I right?

Going from the city to Sausalito the left side is for bikers, the right side is for hikers.

It may be a little confusing to find the way from Sausalito onto the bridge. I'm with you, Sunbum, from the city it's easier.

Bikes ARE allowed on the ferry, right? Or they can take the Golden Gate transit bus to the city.

SF to Sausalito much less strenuous than the other way--yes there is a long, steep hill up from Sausalito to the Bridge.

Yes, I think you should bike from SF to Sausalito - I did this a couple of weeks ago. Will you be renting, or using your own bikes? I rented from Blazing Saddles at Fisherman's Wharf - they had pretty nice bikes, I think they were 24 speeds (more than you'll need) with a bag on the handlebars for water, maps, etc. There's a wonderful bike path all along the waterfront from Fisherman's Wharf to the bridge - be sure to ride out to the wave organ near the yacht club, it's pretty cool. I stopped at the Fort Point Visitor's Center near the bridge and bought a grilled vegetable with balsamic vinegar sandwich on focacia bread for lunch, which was delicious, and sat outside admiring the water view while I ate. The only really strenuous part of the ride was the hill leading up to the bridge, I did have to get off and walk a little ways, but it wasn't all that far.

I worried that I'd have trouble figuring our where to go to get to Sausalito once I crossed the bridge, but it was actually pretty obvious where to go. It was a very long and steep hill, I sure wouldn't want to be riding uphill from Sausalito on it unless I was in really great shape (which I'm not :-( ) I really do think the other direction must be easier.

I took the ferry back to the city - there were lots of people with bikes on the ferry. In fact, when I rented the bike from Blazing Saddles, they gave me a ferry ticket so I wouldn't have to buy one on the boat. When I returned my bike at the end of the day, thy asked if I had used it, and since I had, they added the cost of the ferry ticket onto my bill, which they wouldn't have done if I'd returned it unused. That's a nice amenity to make the whole outing a little easier.

I really enjoyed my bicycle adventure, it was definitely a highlight of my week in San Francisco. I'm sure you'll love it.

I agree with the previous posters- it would be much easier to go from the city to Sausalito. The hill down to Sausalito is steep and long.
DH and I did this a couple of weeks ago; there was construction on one side of the bridge so bikers and walkers were on the same side. I thin it would be much easier if they are separated.
You should definitley encourage your daughter to do this- it was an amazing experience!
There were tons of people with rented bikes on the ferry back to SF.
Also, tell her to eat at Hamburgers in Sausalito- they have the best burgers ever!

Normally, cyclists can ride on the Bay side of the bridge on weekdays but must ride on the ocean side on weekends.

The ride from SF to Sausalito is much easier as the paths that take you up to the bridge have less of grade.
