For the geography people: With the Mississippi River as the dividing line between the east and the west, what is the highest mountain, highest mountain range, tallest single drop in a stream/river (waterfall), tallest waterfall (total height), biggest waterfall (by the amount of water going over it), highest town, highest point on a paved road, biggest rock,tallest cliffs, tallest concrete dam, deepest canyon, biggest canyon, tallest earthen dam, in both the east and the west? Anotherwards, what is the highest/tallest/biggest in the west? What is the highest/tallest/biggest in the east? Just a little trivia for you. I am curious to see what the results are. I have always been interested in where the highest/tallest/biggest things are and they are what I usally travel to see.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, but I believe the highest waterfall in the US is Yosemite Falls. The deepest lake is Crater Lake(I'm sure of that one). I think Leadville, CO and Alma, CO argue about which town is at the highest elevation. And I think El Capitan is the biggest rock?

I'm pretty sure Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi.

Quite an involved question, but I am quite sure that none of the above are in Florida (in the East), or Texas in the West, despite all it's superlatives.

Wheeler Peak, tallest point in Nevada. (Great Basin National Park), also near there along US 50 is considered the "Loneliest Road" in America.

Highest point in the east is Mt. Mitchell near Asheville, N.C., and since the road up there is paved, I'm guessing that's also the highest paved road in the east. Highest town in the east is supposed to be Beech Mtn., N.C.

Since I love driving, I'll give you these:

Highest road in the US it the Mount Evans Byway in Colorado. It goes to the top of the peak, at 14,264ft. It's paved.

In the East, it's NC128 that goes up Mt. Mitchell (6,684ft), which as stjohnbound says is the highest peak East of the Misssissippi. Its end is about 100ft below the summit, but it's easily the highest road in the east. It's also paved.

Assuming you are not excluding the two US states of Alaska and Hawaii then you can geologically fight it out as to which one of the two "peaks" McKinley or Mauna Loa are the highest in the ENTIRE United States.

It looks like Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet but as far as elevation <b>above sea level</b>, there are a lot of other peaks higher than Mauna Loa's elevation of 13,681 ft.

Mt. McKinley, Alaska is the highest point in North America at 20,230 feet above sea level and I've seen the peak!

Mt. Whitney, California is the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states at 14,464 feet above sea level.

Just want to clear up something. I am not asking what is the tallest/biggest/highest in the entire united states, but what is the biggest in the west and in the east. With the east and west seperate, since most of the records in tallest/biggest/highest are out west. You all got the obvious ones. Yosemite Falls total in height is the highest in the United States (I am not sure about it being the highest single drop). Highest town is tied between Alma and Leadville,CO. Mt. Micheal is the highest Mountain east of the Mississippi. The road up the mountain might be the highest road east of the Mississippi, but I am not sure if the road goes all the way to the top. Mt. Evans Byway is the highest road in the U.S. and I think Niagra Falls is the biggest waterfall by volume of water. OneWanderingJew- I think the Guiness Book only has world records, but I am not sure. It has more stuff like &quot;World's Tallest Themometer&quot; as Utahtea suggested, than geographical records. By the way Utahtea, I went to that website on that and found it interesting to have a 134 foot themometer.

Highest Mountain is the West is Mt. Whitney, CA.

I'm not sure if this is in the litany of superlatives orginally posted, but Mt. LeConte in the Smokies is the tallest in the east in terms of relief differntial between peak and base.

Deepest canyon? Hell's Canyon is what I have always heard. But that depends on how you measure it.

Okay, let me narrow the question down some. What is the tallest single drop in a river in the east? What is the tallest single drop in the west? Where are the tallest cliffs and where is the tallest rock? Where is the biggest waterfall in the west? And one more, which is the biggest canyon and deepest canyon in the east?
