Big Sur Lodging

The AAA book only has two places listed for Big Sur, Ventana Inn and Big Sur Lodge. Are the others, or are you pretty limited as to where you can stay there?

Joanie: Go to http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/lodging.html . There is other lodging, but not a lot of it. I'd suggest reservations.

Have you run across the Post Ranch Inn in your search? I don't know what your budget is, but chances are you can't afford this place (I and most people I know can't either!), but it's definitely worth taking a look at. Or even worth it to have a drink in the restaurant there. The walls are all glass, with incredible views of the Pacific. It's the most amazing place, we took a look at the restaurant and grounds there just out of curiosity. Really unique - just for fun!

I've been collecting information for a driving trip along the California shore some day and am wondering how the Ventane Inn compares to the Post Ranch Inn ... I know that both are extremely expensive, but how do the other amenities compare, i.e., location, atmosphere, rooms, service, food, etc?

There are several more places in Big Sur area than listed in the guide book. I usually camp but for those special occassions stay at Post Ranch Inn- they have winter/spring specials<BR><BR>Here's a site that seems to show all the options<BR>http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/lodging.html<BR><BR>Have fun I love Big Sur. It is usually sunny in the summer when the rest of the coast is fogged in.

Sorry I didn't see all those other replys. I love the post ranch inn because of the location...It is right on the bluff with just beautiful views. There is a basking pool open 24 hours that on the edge of the cliff. In march you can see spouting whales. At night you can see stars. The mini bars come stocked with non alcoholic drinks and snacks for no extra charge(It's so expensive anyway). There is a nice pool in the meadow and the beds are so comfy.<BR>If it's a celebration you will get a bottle of bubbly waiting for you in your room. Nice friendly staff, casual attire. Awesome land.

At the south end of the Big Sur drive is the Ragged Point Inn with beautiful ocean views and views back to the Big Sur coast. Also a path down to the ocean. I think it should be more reasonable that Ventana or Post Ranch. Otherwise, go just a bit farther south to Moonstone Beach in Cambria. Lots of affordable place there.

The Post Ranch Inn is on the coast, Ventana is inland uphill, right across the street. Personally, I love the Post Ranch Inn. I stayed in a Coast House and was in pain to leave. The redwoods around the house are so beautiful with the ocean view below. The bath is like a jetted Japanese soaking tub + shower. Yes, the room is stocked with snacks and drinks at no extra charge. Loads of firewood available on the front deck. I loved the deck from bed to bath, to enjoy the view from any point in the house. <BR>Breakfast is also included and was a buffet and lunch/dinner are fabulous! I was very impressed, what a wonderful chef!<BR>No tv/radio or cars adds to the beauty. The 'infinity' pool at night under a full moon and the stars is a pleasure beyond discription.<BR>Please also note, the Post family history is fascinating, and told in pictures and stories throughout the property. I was thrilled to meet Billy Post, a charming man, with an extraordinary vision, to create such a rare place that truely honors the land. Next visit, I hope to get an underground ocean house, and learn how to build my own.<BR>If you want peace, exceptional dining and a healing experence, the Post Ranch Inn is the very best anywhere.<BR>If you want the sound of the surf, the Half Moon Bay, CA Ritz Carlton it THE place, but that's another story.
