Big Sur Fog

Is the fog there every day or just some. We will be there the 23rd of August. We did attempt it two years ago but we couldn't see a thing so decided to turn back after about 10 miles. Just wondering if that's the case everyday. Every morning? till whwt time approximately? any help would be appreciated. I know you can't be precise. Would just like to have an idea of what to expect.

I doubt the weather is the same anywhere every single day. Check the forecast ahead of time. Most likely, fog is in the morning and then "burns off" by midday. Where is your starting point?

As a general rule, when it's hot inland it's foggy on the coast. August can be perpetually foggy, but you never know. And it does often lift after noon (or a bit later if it's thick) and rolls in again around sundown.

I will be driving along the coast highway next year and was wondering if there is a site to check the road conditions for such things as fog. Thinking Half Moon Bay to Big Sur. Thanks.

The fog is totally capricious, and you can't depend on forecasts, even the previous day, because the forecasters just don't know. By late August the foggy days are somewhat less than earlier in the summer. If there is fog, and it is going to burn off, your best bet is around noon to 4 pm. Even different stretches of Big Sur Highway can have different conditions.

Having spent a lot of time on the coast, I would estimate that you have a 70 percent chance of fog over 70 percent of Highway 1 between Monterey and SLO. The probability for fog is higher in the morning and lower in the afternoon.

My crystal ball shows me that there will be fog on the morning of August 23rd.

:D

And if it is foggy around Monterey, I wouldn't assume it is foggy all the way down the Big Sur coast.

Last summer we were coming back from a weekend camping trip at Limekiln state park and had patches of fog and clear skies. At Limekiln, the weather had been unusually warm and clear all weekend - highs into the 80s. On the way back up the coast we had sections that were totally socked in with fog and sections that were crystal clear. The best sections were when we were in a clear section and could see the fog rolling in and blowing around up ahead. If you've never seen this, you will be amazed that fog can actually do that - LOL.

Now that I reread my query today, I realize that this was probably an inane question. However, as always, the Fodorites have come through with answers, without berating me for a question impossible to answer definitively.
I guess I can prety well expect that there will be some fog somewhere, sometime, especially during the A.M.
Gb944, I think that your crystal ball is 100% correct.
